Daintree author Sandy Davies’ book The Power to Rise Above included in Oscars gift bags

Guests at this year’s Oscars will walk away from the star-studded event with a little slice of the Far North, included in their swanky gift bags.

There will be a Far North flavour to Monday’s Academy Awards ceremony, with a Daintree woman’s book to be gifted to the likes of Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Steven Spielberg and other Hollywood stars.

For the past 20 years, Oscar nominees have received a Hollywood Swag Bag – filled with an assortment of luxury goodies and normally valued in excess of $100,000.

This year, the highly-publicised bags will feature The Power to Rise Above; the creation of Daintree editor and positive ageing women’s advocate Sandy Davies.

The anthology, featuring works from Far North women and others across the world, is about overcoming bullying, abuse, heartbreak and trauma.

Ms Davies said she was excited the book would be in the hands of the Oscar nominees.

“I’m so thrilled for all of us from all across the globe but more than that, how did a little project up at Daintree take on such wings that it is now being gifted to women like Cate Blanchett, Michelle Williams, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Yeoh and even Steven Spielberg?” she said.

“I just love that; those Oscar nominees are going to be flicking through our book and our message of hope is maybe going to resonate with one of them.”

There’s plenty of competition to have products featured in the Hollywood Swag Bag but Ms Davies said it was fortunate the messaging of the book struck a chord with organisers.

“The company that creates the bags are huge amplifiers of women-made projects and supporting other women,” Ms Davies said.

“I said ‘if our message resonates with you, let us know if there’s any chance that our book might be a good fit in the swag bags.’

“That was nine months ago. I never expected them to come back and say ‘yes, we love your book - it’s exactly what we’re looking for’,” she said.
