A running series of brawls at a birthday party, the alleged breaking of a guest’s jaw and assault of a police officer has led to the arrest of a Mossman man on a series of serious charges.

A running series of brawls at a birthday party, and the alleged breaking of a guest’s jaw and assault of a police officer, has led to the arrest of a Mossman man on a series of serious charges.
Officers were called to the Mossman Showgrounds at about 1.30am on September 7 after multiple fights allegedly broke out at a community member’s eighteenth birthday celebration.
Police allege 30-year-old Mossman man, Peter Amber, punched a 31-year-old Coen man in an unprovoked attack.
The 31-year-old man sustained a broken jaw which required surgery.
Mr Amber is also accused of assaulting a police officer before fleeing on foot, police allege.
Mossman Police Officer in Charge Sergeant Matthew Smith said without staff on deck trained in the responsible service of alcohol, things got out of hand.
“It was a bit of a doozy, but it happens occasionally,” he said.
“There was not much we could do other than gather witness statements and chase it up later, which is what we did.”
Fast forward to Thursday, October 17, Sergeant Smith said Mossman police tracked the wanted man to a Mossman Gorge address.
Officers arrived to arrest the alleged offender, however the man fled on foot, before police located and arrested him in Mossman a short time later.
“He has been causing a bit of civil unrest and it will definitely reduce our calls for service now he has been locked up,” Sergeant Smith said.
“We objected to him getting bail and hopefully he did not get bail or he will be back out causing us trouble tonight.”
Police bail was refused and Mr Amber was scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Friday, October 18.
