Cairns cyclists toughed it out in gruelling MiHaven Mareeba Tour

It was hot, dry and gusty but riders in the three stage MiHaven Mareeba Tour showed grit as they competed in the annual event which comprised a time trial, road race and criterium. How the tour went.

Cycling time trial action as the 2022 MiHaven Mareeba Tour

Hot and gusty conditions made for a tough three-stage event at the fourth annual MiHaven Mareeba Tour (MMT) on the weekend.

Cairns Cycling Club representative Bianca Grillo said 34 riders from Cairns and Townsville contested the event which was held over October 15 and 16.

Grillo said the level of racing was very impressive.

“On Saturday we started with the time-trial at Jaques Coffee Plantation, then there was the criterium at the MakoTrac International,” she said,

“Then on Sunday we held the road race on Chewko Rd, which had a different distance for the each grade.

“A-Grade rode 70km, B-grade rode 60km, C-Grade rode 50km and D-Grade rode 40km.”

The men’s A-Grade was won by Thomas Beddome who was also Rider of the The Tour, B-Grade by David Inglis, C-Grade Dan Broadfoot, D-Grade Chloe Buckley, U13 Eliza Rollason, U11 Thomas Huyser and Women’s champion was Kylie Anderson.

Anderson, 46, has raced in ever MMT as part of the Cairns Womens Race Team.

“It was a really tough event,” she said.

“It was hilly, the wind did not let up.

“I was feeling super fatigued but I finished upright.”

Anderson said she was now in training for the Tweed Enduro Aquabike qualifier for World championships in Townsville in 2024.
