Bizarre arrest after man shot dead in park near shopping centre at Beenleigh, Queensland
Police have released footage of an alleged killer hiding in a Gold Coast creek shortly after a man was shot dead in a park.
Footage has been released of an alleged killer hiding from police in a Gold Coast creek.
Police allege the suspect fatally shot a 35-year-old Bahrs Scrub man in the chest at Hugh Muntz Park at Beenleigh, next to the Beenleigh Marketplace shopping centre, about 10.40pm on Tuesday.
The victim was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
Police say a stolen white Kia Stonic sedan with stolen registration plates fled the scene shortly after the shooting.
“Police sighted the vehicle at Kumbari Ave, Labrador, and a tyre deflation device (TDD) was successfully deployed on Jabiru Island,” a statement read.
The car was driven for a short while before being abandoned at the intersection of Hope Island Rd and Helensvale Rd.
“A man fled the vehicle on foot into nearby scrub,” police said.
The dog squad swept the area and soon located a 22-year-old Beenleigh man hiding underwater among the reeds near Saltwater Park.
The 22-year-old Beenleigh man was arrested at the scene.
Footage shows officers yelling at the man soon after they allegedly found a discarded firearm nearby.
“Found a piece of property here too mate. It’s a hoodie,” an officer says.
“Hands up now... walk towards me now... get on your stomach.
“You’re under arrest for murder at this stage.
“We got ammunition coming out.”
Police allege they found ammunition when they searched the man.
The park remains cordoned off on Wednesday morning and a secondary crime scene has been established on the vehicle.
Police believe the shooting was targeted and the parties were known to each other.
A spokesman told NewsWire there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Investigations remain ongoing.
