Police have revealed new details after one man was shot dead and another two were injured in the NSW Northern Rivers.

A man has been charged with murder and another is in hospital under police guard after a fatal shooting in the NSW Northern Rivers.

Police now allege it was a “targeted attack” and that all four men involved were known to one another.

Emergency services rushed to a property on Tyalgum Rd at Eungella - about 10km west of Murwillumbah - at about 1.25pm on Wednesday.

Officers were told two men, aged 41 and 38, were allegedly shot by a 45-year-old manwho fled the scene with a fourth man.

Investigators established Strike Force Bray and numerous crime scenes in their search for the fourth man allegedly involved in the fatal shooting.

With the help of the dog squad, police found a 36-year-old man hiding in bushland near Tumbulgum Rd.

He was arrested and taken to Tweed Heads police station, where he was charged with murder.

He was refused bail and is due to face court on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Acting Superintendent Matthew Zimmer said police would allege the 45-year-old fled the scene while armed with a handgun, which has not been located.

“He has been arrested by virtue of an arrest warrant for murder,” he said.

“He will remain under police guard until he is in a position to be released from hospital and extradited to NSW to face those charges.”

A second man is expected to be charged with murder.

Police are yet to determine the motive behind the attack, but allege it was a “targeted attack”.

“The incident involved two men (being) seriously injured - due to the nature of those injuries, we have yet to have an opportunity to speak to them,” Superintendent Zimmer said.

He said the four men were believed to be associates, revealing the two men who were shot were cousins.

“The four men are known to each other. It is a targeted attack,” he said.

“We are confident the team and allegedly involved in the shooting are both in police custody and as such there is no ongoing risk to public safety.”

Police investigations are ongoing.
