Bravus adds Mackay to Carmichael Mine site FIFO network

Mackay can now compete with Rockhampton and Townsville for FIFO workers to a major Queensland mine. Here’s how much workers can earn and when the direct flights start.

Mackay’s resources economy continues to fly high with the announcement Bravus will add the city to its regional FIFO network.

The company flies in workers to its 10m tonne-per-annum coal mine northwest of Clermont from Townsville and Rockhampton and now, two flights a week will leave from Mackay, something Resources Industry Network general manager Dean Kirkwood said would deliver direct and flow-on benefits to the city.

“They give optionality to Mackay’s experienced mining workforce and they open doors for locals who want to gain employment in the resources sector but still call our slice of paradise home,” he said.

The flight is just over an hour and Bravus chief operating officer Mick Crowe said it would be easier for coal workers to call Mackay home and keep spending money in the region.

“We are really pleased to be able to offer direct flights from the city to provide new opportunities for the talented operators and tradespeople who live here and create more value for the local coffee shops, real estate agents, car dealers and other businesses that indirectly benefit from mining,” he said.

In addition to FIFO, the company also sources drive-in drive-out workers from the Isaac region.

The flights begin in December and coincide with a call-out for more workers at the mine.

“Anyone interested in joining the team at Carmichael should jump online and apply through the Carmichael Jobs portal,” Mr Crowe said.

“Like every mining operation the positions are well-paid and there is no question that flying with us is a whole lot better for your fatigue management and your rest and recreation than a four-hour drive.”

The portal shows up to 55 positions on offer, from haul truck operators to diesel fitters.

A haul truck operator sourced from Mackay can expect to earn $52 an hour on a 7/7 roster, with flights out of the city paid for by the company.

An excavator operator can nab $64 an hour on a 7/7 roster with flights out of Mackay paid for by the company.

Bravus, formerly known as Adani, constructed the mine in the face of relentless opposition from environmentalists.

It now exports coal to Asia-Pacific markets through the Abbot Point Terminal north of Bowen.
