Woodville Rd will be turned into a dining and shopping strip under a $13.7 million plan from Charles Sturt Council.

The plan – which takes in the stretch of Woodville Rd between Port Rd and the train line – was endorsed by councillors at a meeting on Monday night.

It includes cutting the road down to one lane each way during off-peak times, widening the footpath and planting new trees along a widened median strip and roadside.

Public art and a redesign of the forecourt at the council’s civic centre are also included in the plan, as well as undergrounding powerlines.

It is hoped the unfunded project – which would take three years and turn the area close to the St Clair development into a main street – can begin in the next three years.

A large vacant block next to the train line, which is currently used as a carpark, will also be considered for development and the left lanes of Woodville Rd designated for parking, except in peak times.

A report to councillors prepared by Charles Sturt urban projects manager Craig Daniel said the plan would introduce “enhanced outdoor dining options and new and much needed retail options for this growing community”.

Charles Sturt endorsed a masterplan for the area in 2010, which had led to the renovation of buildings such as the old State Bank which houses popular restaurant NNQ, but the streetfront upgrade would be the biggest change to the strip.

Cr Kelly Thomas told Monday night’s meeting the upgrade would make a “massive difference” to the Woodville area.

“I think the community here aren’t all necessarily bells and whistles,” Cr Thomas said.

“I think they do want the feel of not so much Prospect Rd with artworks and things like that but that home feel.”

The plans will be put out for public consultation in October and a further report will be given to councillors in November.
