Western suburbs councils have brought in measures including free meals and vouchers to spend at local businesses to make life easier for their residents doing it tough due to COVID-19.
Port Adelaide Enfield Council Mayor Claire Boan said there were projects already underway and more in the works to help people get back on their feet.
“We know our local community like so many others, has been hard hit by unemployment, restrictions to their business and life, social isolation and anxiety about the future,” Mrs Boan said.
“We don’t know all the impacts yet, and we won’t know all the answers. We have a range of projects already underway, more being planned and a commitment to working with the community to identify and respond to issues as they emerge.”
Mrs Boan said the council was also planning new local tourism initiatives starting in October and looking at ways to reinvigorate the live music scene.
“Our libraries continue to provide support for people looking for work, with access to technology and advice,” she said.
“We know we’ll all need to work together to ensure we can find our way through this, so any ideas are welcome, so that we can bounce back better.”
Here’s some of the ways western suburbs councils are offering support:
FREE FOOD
Port Adelaide Enfield Council has teamed up with OzHarvestSA to offer some relief through a Pop Up Food Market at the Lefevre Community Stadium on Tuesdays from 11:30am to 12:30pm.
It is a free food market for disadvantaged people who need a bit of help, with anybody in need welcome to come along.
Just bring along a shopping bag.
BUSINESS VOUCHERS
West Torrens Council is providing $100,000 worth of vouchers to eligible residents as part of an economic stimulus package for local small businesses.
The Think, buy, be LOCAL campaign provides $25 vouchers to eligible residents to be spent at local small businesses who participate in the campaign and vouchers are reimbursed by Council.
The vouchers can be used at a range of local restaurants, cafes, gyms and leisure centres.
