The mystery of how two sheep came to be wandering in Henley Beach has been solved, after their owner came forward to claim the animals.
Anthony Phillips collected the sheep from the RSPCA’s Lonsdale shelter on Saturday, 12 days after a resident found them in the front yard of her Fleetwood Crescent home.
“As I drove them back home … there were people pulling up and asking me if they were the Henley Beach sheep,” Mr Phillps said.
Mr Phillips said he got the sheep from his dad’s hobby farm at Two Wells three weeks ago, to be a “living lawnmower” at his Northey Court home.
“But the black-faced one, the ram, headbutted the gate and they decided to take a walk towards Henley Square,” he said.
“They obviously thought the grass was greener on the other side of the fence.
“I think they were headed to the Ramsgate.”
Mr Phillips suspected there might be a problem when, a few days before their disappearing act, he put the sheep in his front yard.
“I could hear things going on so I went to take a look and there were about 20 kids trying to feed them,” he said.
“I kept them out the back from then on.”
The two sheep were found lazing in a driveway on Tuesday, July 14.
With the help of police officers, the sheep were captured and taken to the RSCPA’s shelter where they spent more than a week waiting for their owner to collect them.
Mr Phillips panicked when he noticed the sheep were missing and drove around the streets searching for them.
He said the animals had been taken back to his dad’s Two Wells property, where they will live out their days.
“It was only ever a short-term solution for the lawn, but ended being a bit shorter than I thought,” he said.
As for whether Mr Phillip will get any more sheep to control his lawn,
“It’s probably not the way to go,” he said. “I’ve got a lawnmower now.”
