Three supplementary council elections will be held in the state this year following the sudden and tragic deaths of elected members.

Port Adelaide Enfield councillor, former deputy mayor and longstanding surf lifesaving volunteer Peter Jamieson died on June 16 aged 67, while Holdfast Bay councillor Rosalina “Mikki” Bouchee, 70, also passed on July 30.

Their deaths comes after the passing of Streaky Bay councillor Peter Hackett, 69, on April 26 triggered a supplementary election earlier this year.

Mr Jamieson, of North Haven, had served the council since 2003 and had given nearly 50 years of his life to Surf Life Saving SA after joining in 1972.

PAE mayor Claire Boan said he was widely regarded for his advocacy, work for environmental and coastal matters and his career in education.

Meanwhile, Ms Bouchee was described as a “trailblazer” and an “extraordinary loss” by the council in a statement.

First elected in 1987, she went on to represent the area for 18 years and was also a one-time deputy mayor.

Tea Tree Gully Council held a by-election after the passing of Jim McLafferty in November, 2017, who was replaced by his wife, Chris.

Nominations will open for the Somerton Ward in Holdfast Bay on September 23 and close on October 7, and PAE’s Outer Harbor Ward on August 26 and September 9.

However, dates for scrutiny and the counting of votes in either wards have not yet been announced.

A Local Government Association spokeswoman said it was “sad to hear of the passing of these long-term council members”.

“Both of them were strong advocates for their communities and generous contributors to the local government sector,” the spokeswoman said.

“They both leave big shoes to fill, and we wish any potential candidates well as they look to step into these important community leadership roles.”
