Troy Trengove faces court charged with Royal Park shooting of John Rahme

A man who allegedly kicked down the door of a Royal Park workshop with two others before firing a shot has admitted in court he caused harm, but not “serious” harm.

A man who allegedly fired a bullet into a man’s shoulder at a Royal Park workshop failed in his bid to have a plea to a lesser charge accepted.

Troy Richard Trengove, 51, faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday, charged with the alleged shooting on Brandwood St in January.

Trengove, of Parafield Gardens, pleaded not guilty to serious criminal trespass, recklessly causing serious harm and discharging a firearm.

However, he pleaded guilty to recklessly causing harm, which wasn’t accepted by prosecution, as well as possessing a firearm, namely an improvised zip firearm and ammunition.

Tyrone James Doyle Tarrant, 45, of Alford, and Kurt Francis Kernahan, 30, of Manningham, pleaded not guilty earlier this month to serious criminal trespass, recklessly causing serious harm and discharging a firearm.

The men were initially charged with the attempted murder of Royal Park man John Gabby Rahme but the charges have since been downgraded.

Earlier this month, Scott Laidlaw, for Mr Trengove, argued they had no case to answer for the charge of serious criminal trespass, saying the shot was fired when Mr Trengove was outside the premises.

“They kicked at the door until it broke, they broke the door in half, they kicked the s*** out of it,” Mr Laidlaw said reading from Mr Rahme’s statement.

The court heard Mr Rahme said he then turned around to run into the warehouse and saw Mr Trengove with the pistol, as well as Mr Kernahan and Mr Tarrant.

“Trengove wasn’t even wearing a mask, I believe the three male persons were wearing bandannas but looked like the bandannas kept falling off their faces,” he said in the statement.

A prosecutor told the court their case was that Mr Trengove fired the shot while he was leaning inside the premises and therefore committing the trespass.

The court heard Mr Rahme was hit in his left shoulder with the shot, before the group ran off.

The state’s chief magistrate, Judge Mary-Louise Hribal said she found a case to answer for the serious criminal trespass.

On Tuesday, Judge Hribal committed Trengove’s charges to the District Court for arraignment in February.
