THE owners of the “world’s best supermarket” have announced they are opening up a new store in suburban Adelaide.
South Australian family company Commercial Retail Group, which owns the Frewville Foodland, is set to open a new store in the Football Park housing development at West Lakes.
The supermarket will be part of a new retail precinct in the 1600-home WEST development, which will also feature a restaurant and cafe strip.
CRG’s Frewville outlet won the International Retailer of The Year Excellence Award at the IGA Conference in the US in 2016 and again in 2017.
Director Spero Chapley said the site for the West Lakes supermarket was substantially larger than the operation in Frewville and could generate more than 400 local jobs.
“We believe in local jobs, which is why you won’t find self-service check-outs in our stores,” he said
“That same commitment to everything we do will be at the heart of our new development at WEST.”
WEST project director Chris Menz said the shopping precinct, on Charles Street, would deliver a “first-class retail experiences”.
“We’re now looking for high quality and experienced retail operators and owners to join us at WEST and are currently inviting formal registrations of interest.”
The precinct is planned to include restaurants, home, lifestyle and specialty food stores, along with a potential community and childcare centre, health facilities and a playground.
Charles Sturt Mayor Angela Evans said the news was a sign of the regeneration and continuing growth of West Lakes and the western suburbs.
Development of the Charles Street precinct is expected to begin in 2018.
The first stage of the $1 billion housing development at Football Park is nearing completion, with the first occupants of 62 new homes and two apartment blocks set to move in this August.
The SANFL sold the land for $71 million to developers Commercial and General in November 2014.
