A seven-storey hotel will be built at one of Glenelg’s most prominent corners.
The state’s planning panel has approved a $25 million plan from the Taplin Group, which will transform the corner of Jetty Rd and Colley Tce.
Overlooking Moseley Square, the new hotel will have 60 rooms and a bar, restaurant and function room on its top floor.
The existing shops facing Jetty Rd will be retained and three new retail outlets with recessed facades facing Colley Tce built.
It replaces a previous plan to build a seven-storey apartment building on the site.
Taplin Real Estate director Andrew Taplin said he hoped construction would start in March next year.
“I think that Glenelg is crying out for this sort of facility and we want to bring it to the market,” Mr Taplin said.
He said he swapped from building an apartment complex because there was already a lot of residential development going on in the area.
“During the process we were actually approached by a number of experienced hotel operators wanting to establish down at Glenelg which caused us to revisit our plan,” Mr Taplin said.

Jetty Rd Mainstreet Committee chairman Con Maios was full of praise for the development, which he said would create many jobs during its construction and once the hotel opened.
“This is fantastic for Jetty Rd, one of the most popular beachside destinations in Adelaide,” Mr Maios said.
He was also pleased the plan had been swapped from an apartment complex to a hotel, saying it was “difficult” when you mixed residential with commercial.
Mr Taplin also has plans to build an $18 million office building with space for up to 200 staff at 85-87 Jetty Rd.
The building would be six storeys and sit between Byron and Jetty streets.
