A minigolf course will be built at the Regency Park Community Golf Course, as part of a “significant” investment in the facility that will help open it up to the wider community.
Golf facility management company GreenSpace has taken over running the site, which is owned by Port Adelaide Enfield Council, and plans to turn it into “the best little golf course in Adelaide”.
GreenSpace managing director Peter Vlahandreas said work on the minigolf course would start in two to four weeks and it would open before Christmas.
To be called Shanx, as a play on the golfing term shank, he said it would be more of a putting course than a traditional minigolf set-up that often had obstacles to avoid.
Mr Vlahandreas said it aimed to attract families and inspire the next generation of golfers.
“The brand intends to be fun, quirky and family-oriented,” Mr Vlahandreas said.
“We also have a mascot Rox the Fox who we will be rolling out.”
He said ways to better use the space at the golf course – such as community gardens, fairs and walk your dog while playing golf sessions – were also being investigated.
“If it’s just a golf course most people say, ‘I’m not going there, I'm not a golfer’,” he said.
“We want to open it up not just to the golfer.
“What it does then it starts to become part of the community.”
Mr Vlahandreas said this was a “unique opportunity to develop a first-class facility that is modern, family friendly, fun, innovative and community centric”.
“GreenSpace is putting a significant amount of money into the facility in partnership with Port Adelaide Enfield Council,” he said.

Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Claire Boan said the changes were about “opening up the game of golf to new people, both casual and serious”.
“Regency Park is a much-loved golf course, but we can’t wait to unlock its potential even further with these exciting developments which will encourage more and more people to get outside and give golf a go,” she said.
