The 2025 US Masters golf tournament has thrown a major spanner in the works for one of South Australia’s biggest ever sporting events – with the premier set to make a massive decision on next year’s LIV Golf date.
While Adelaide has become accustomed to hosting the much-loved event in April, next year’s Masters tournament is scheduled to start about the same time, opening the door for a possible move to February.
On Monday, Premier Peter Malinauskas outlined the risk involved with pushing the date back further to late April or early May instead.
“We do not want a golf tournament in May,” Mr Malinauskas said.
“I think that becomes too risky, particularly for people who put their hand in their pocket and travel from interstate or overseas to go to an event if it gets rained out.”
Figures show a record 94,000 descended on The Grange Golf Club across this year’s three-day event, with over 40 per cent of ticket buyers from out of state and ticket purchasers from more than 30 different countries in attendance.
To accommodate for the hotter weather, a later start for the 2025 event is expected – while some form of women's competition has also been hinted at.
