Port Adelaide Enfield councillor Mark Basham is questioning where the next generation of kids will learn to swim, following the closure of a number of swimming centres and others operating at capacity.
Mr Basham, who represents the Northfield ward, said a new public indoor pool is desperately needed for the eastern side of Port Adelaide Enfield.
He said the needed was driven by the closure of the Strathmont Centre pool at Oakden, public access to the Hampstead Rehab Centre pool being stopped and the other local pools being full.
Questions also continue about the future of the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, which is used by many in the Port Adelaide Enfield council area.
“Many learnt to swim at Strathmont of Hampstead, but where do they go now?” he said.
“While we have a pool at the Parks community centre, it’s not easily accessible by public transport (for people in the eastern council area).
“Even if you go further afield, you’re finding places booked out, so children are simply not learning to swim. I’ve spoken to a number of parents whose kids aren’t learning to swim because there’s a shortage of spaces.”
Mr Basham said while the need for a new pool in the area had been discussed for many years, there had been a real “groundswell” calling for the facility in recent months.
He urged anyone keen to see a pool built in the eastern council area to give their feedback on the council’s draft Annual Business Plan and Budget, which is out for consultation at the moment.
It is accessible at haveyoursay.cityofpae.sa.gov.au until May 12.
