A busy thoroughfare in the heart of Port Adelaide is in line for a nearly $2 million makeover that will turn it into a “premium boulevard”.

Port Adelaide Enfield Council has a $1.85 million plan to upgrade McLaren Parade, from Commercial Rd to Timpson St.

Under the plan, which will be released for community consultation in August, kerbs along the road would be removed and landscaping and trees increased to encourage a “low-speed environment” that prioritised pedestrians and cyclists.

Public art would be installed, along with bench seats and other street furniture, and

spaces would be created that allowed and encouraged people to gather.

Connections to the nearby waterfront area would be improved and the Port’s character would be embraced by highlighting the area’s historic buildings.

A council report said the developer of the $19 million Rydges Hotel proposed for the Port Adelaide waterfront supported the project.

It said the developer had advised work on the six-storey, 18-room hotel, planned for a vacant block on McLaren Parade – just metres from the wharf and next to the old Art Deco Harbors Board building – would start in early-mid 2021.

Under the hotel plan, a restaurant and bar would be included at the corner of Lipson St and the wharf promenade, as well as an open terrace with outdoor dining.

The hotel is currently with the State Commission Assessment Panel for final approval.

The council has received a $600,000 State Government grant towards the McLaren Parade upgrade, which must be spent prior to December, and has so far budgeted a further $600,000 itself.

“The upgrade of McLaren Parade will improve the amenity of the local area and provide a premium boulevard for our state tourist area which would improve social outcomes for local residents and tourists,” the report said.

Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Claire Boan said she could not wait to see the area “come to life” with people walking and cycling through the precinct.

“Creating exciting public spaces in the heart of the Port is a key part of reigniting our spectacular river and local heritage precinct,” she said.
