A mum has been accused of running an extensive fraud operation including allegedly having 50 credit cards and other stolen ID to fuel her drug addiction.

A mother who is accused of having stolen identification and 50 credit cards in her possession was running the fraud operation to support her drug addiction, police will allege.

Justine Dawn Smith, 36, applied for bail by video link in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday, accused of running the elaborate scheme.

A police prosecutor opposed the bail application

The court heard one of Smith’s alleged victims received an expiation notice for a rental car, despite never having rented one.

The alleged victim rang the company and was informed that someone had hired a car and provided her driver’s licence on March 18 at Croydon Park.

CCTV footage was reviewed and Smith was arrested.

The court heard police searched Smith’s Bowden house and a bedroom which they believed to be Smith’s as her court bail papers were found there.

“In that bedroom police located 50 credit cards, all in different names … there were 150 various letters which came from several different suburbs,” the police prosecutor said.

“Prosecution suspect that she is offending to support her drug addiction.

“There’s an ongoing fraud investigation.”

The court heard police also found 20 marriage and birth certificates, 35 Medicare cards and 400 pages of credit card numbers.

“Given what police have located, prosecution expects further charges to be laid against the defendant,” the police prosecutor said.

“Prosecution also has concerns that if the defendant is granted bail she may well interfere with ongoing investigations.”

The court heard Smith had multiple drug driving convictions.

Smith, of Bowden, is currently charged with possessing prohibited material (identity theft) and possessing a controlled drug. She is yet to enter any pleas.

Christina Chrisakas, for Smith, told the court Smith would be contesting the allegations.

“The residence where Ms Smith is residing is a share home – there are a number of other residents who reside at that premises and it’s unclear at this point in time where those items are located and whether or not Ms Smith is involved in any of that,” Ms Chrisakas said.

“She does have three children.”

The court heard Smith suffered from depression and anxiety.

“It has resulted in an ongoing issue with methamphetamine,” Ms Chrisakas said.

Magistrate Stefan Metanomski said he wouldn’t consider anything less than home detention bail due to the seriousness of the allegations.

He ordered a home detention bail report and adjourned the application until next week.
