Plans to transform the former University of Adelaide Thebarton campus into a thriving residential and commercial hub have been unveiled.

In 2016, the site was purchased by developers Australasian Property Developments.

The developers have collaborated with West Torrens Council to develop and an overarching vision for the site.

Occcuping a prime city fringe location, the site is only 3km northwest of the CBD and 500m from the Brickworks Marketplace.

The site also contains the historic Brickworks Hoffman kiln and chimney.

The Hoffman kiln was built by former brickmakers J Hallett and Son Ltd and it was heritage listed in 1983. It is the only Hoffman kiln remaining in SA.

A report, prepared by MasterPlan SA, outlines including the kiln and chimney in a public open space from Winwood Street to Linear Park, as part of the project.

An east-west pedestrian connection along the top of the River Torrens riverbank would run adjacent to a future residential development.

The report also outlines the potential to enhance the riverbank with new paths and viewing decks.

Development applications have already been lodged with West Torrens Council for a residential development at 40-42 Winwood St.

The application includes six, two-storey townhouses overlooking the River Torrens, two townhouses fronting onto Winwood Street and a four-storey building incorporating 12 apartments.

One of the west’s most popular eateries – Bloom – will be integrated into the proposed Winwood Street redevelopment.

An application is also before council for a microbrewery and restaurant to occupy part of the heritage listed Amdel building at the site.

Author Graham Burns said the report was “deliberately conceptual” – to be used as a broad framework to guide future development.

West Torrens Council will discuss the project at its meeting on Tuesday night.
