Marion Council has agreed to put up $2.4 million to repair the Hallett Cove boardwalk – but the money is conditional on an equal contribution from the State Government.
At a meeting this week, councillors voted in favour of meeting half of the cost for the first two stages of the repairs, which are expected to cost $4.8 million.
This work will include the difficult section between Grey Rd Gully and Kurnabinna Gully on the cliff face – which a council report initially recommended closing if it proved too difficult or expensive to repair – as well as connecting the walkway between Heron Way Reserve and the Field River.
The council hopes to begin work on these sections next year and it is expected to take four years to complete.
Mayor Kris Hanna said he was meeting with Premier Steven Marshall next week to discuss the boardwalk’s rebuild.
He said the meeting was “specifically” about the coastal path and that the State Government was “seriously considering” contributing to the project.
The council plans to progressively reopen most of this by February following repairs, however, due to the age of the timber walkway it will need to be replaced in the long-term.
More than 200 people attended a community meeting earlier this month and thousands have signed a community petition started by Federal Labor MP Amanda Rishworth calling for the Hallett Cove boardwalk to be repaired.
