Two sections of the popular Hallett Cove to Marino coastal boardwalk will reopen next month after being closed for repairs.
A combined 140m of walkway – on Marine Parade and next to the Marino Rocks Boat Ramp – will be reopened to the public.
Structural engineers are inspecting 560 footings and the wooden structures across 12 sites between Marino Esplanade and Peera Street, Hallett Cove.
Investigations have involved looking at the earthworks, geotechnical inspections and an assessment of each structure to determine its condition before repairs are made.
Marion acting city development manager Fiona Harvey said these investigations had shown that Marino Rocks and Marine Parade were safe for the community to walk along.
“The walkway is a popular local attraction and we’re working with engineers to progressively assess and repair the sites and reopen them where we can,” Ms Harvey said.
“Diversions have been set up so people, where possible, can continue to enjoy the trail and the stunning coastal views.”
She said stormwater run-off combined with erosion and climate change had had an extreme impact on the structures’ footings.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety of people using the walkway and we will only re-open sections once repairs have been completed and engineers advise us it is safe,” she said.
The council will receive a report in November detailing the cost and expected time frames of repair work.
Updates will be posted on the City of Marion Facebook page.
