The ageing Marino Hall will be demolished and redeveloped under a $5 million Marion Council plan.
The hall is currently home to a number of community organisations including the Marion Art Group, pilates and yoga groups and the Philadelphia Church of God.
The Newland Ave hall was constructed in stages in the 1940s and 1950s.
At a council meeting, councillor Tim Gard said redeveloping the old hall would improve quality of life for local residents and hall users.
“As far as current happenings are concerned, this is probably the most important thing going on in Marino at the moment,” he said.
A council report said sustainability and noncompliance issues, including disability access and fire services, needed to be addressed in the current building.
Under the plans, the hall will be demolished and rebuilt to almost double its current size.
In 2018, Marion Council acquired an adjoining vacant lot which will allow for the increased size and more carparking.
Plans for the new building include a kitchen, cafe, studio, meeting spaces and two halls.
It would also include a 15kW solar panel system.
There is also scope within the plans to add a rooftop garden for an additional $450,000.
The council report said the garden was not a core part of the plan, but would add to sustainability initiatives and enable coastal views.
The council has committed $2.5 million to the redevelopment under the condition it is able to secure external funding for the remaining $2.5 million.
