Anglicare SA announce new affordable housing development for Woodville West

With rental prices hot as at the moment – and property supply short – a new development is set to bring more affordable housing to the west. See the plan.

Australian property market: Are lending standards about to tighten?

Rental demand in South Australia is sky high, putting pressure on housing affordability – but a $10m affordable housing for the west may help the situation.

AnglicareSA will soon begin the construction of its social and affordable housing development located on a corner block of Nicholls Terrace and Elizabeth St in Woodville West.

The development includes 24 apartments and six villas and will provide affordable rental options for people over the age of 55, people living with disability and young people.

With the development design and approvals finalised, AnglicareSA plans to start construction in July and anticipates the completion of the development will be at the end of 2022.

AnglicareSA Executive General Manager, Housing Michelle Gegenhuber said it was a much needed development.

“At AnglicareSA, we are dedicated to ensuring everyone has the chance to live their best life in vibrant and safe communities,” she said.

“Without affordable, safe and secure housing options, people cannot achieve that vital sense of belonging, meaningful participation in the community, and ultimately their livelihoods.”

Ms Gegenhuber said it was becoming increasingly difficult for older people in the community to age in a place with good access to services and transport.

“The most recent Anglicare Australia Rental Affordability Snapshot found that just three per cent of properties across the country were suitable and affordable for households on government income support payments,” she said.

“The situation is even worse for people on the aged pension and disability support pension, with less than one per cent of properties affordable and suitable.

“The homes designed for this Woodville West site exemplify our focus on providing quality affordable rental options that create a real sense of community.

“We are looking forward to creating more jobs and affordable housing for the South Australian community as a result of this project, and working with the City of Charles Sturt, Renewal SA and SA Housing Authority to have it completed at the end of 2022.”
