Adelaide’s top 10 experiences for families during the summer school holidays

Summer holidays are here – rejoice. Now it’s time to give your kids an adventure they’ll never forget. Here are our top 10.

Now that the school holidays are in full swing, we have come up with a list of 10 activities to help keep children active and entertained in Adelaide.

1. Play School Exhibition

The popular children’s TV show is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an exhibition at the South Australian Maritime Museum. Happy Birthday Play School will take visitors on a trip down memory lane and feature Big Ted, Little Ted, Humpty, Jemima and the Rocket Clock. While you’re at the museum, make sure to check out the other exciting exhibitions on offer.

It’s on at the South Australian Maritime Museum, 126 Lipson St, Port Adelaide. Open every day 10am-5pm (except Good Friday and Christmas Day). The exhibition is on until March 29, 2020. Cost: adults $15, concession $9, child $6, family $34.50.Details here

2. Mini golf

Fancy a bit of putt-putt? Or maybe you want to practise your hole-in-one skills? The 18-hole course at West Beach Mini Golf is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy and stir up a bit of friendly competition. Or if the sun is scorching, you could always head indoors for a round at Holey Moley in the city.

West Beach Mini Golf: Military Rd, West Beach. Open Monday to Thursday, 10am-5pm, Friday, 10am-10pm (weather dependent), Saturday, 9.30am-10pm, Sunday, 9.30am-6pm and public holidays, 9.30am-5pm. 3. TreeClimb

Children can tackle an adventure at new heights at TreeClimb in the Adelaide Parklands. There are more than 70 obstacles over seven different routes to try out, including the grand course for children taller than 135cm, or then there’s the children’s course for those over 100cm.

It’s atPark 20, corner Greenhill and Unley roads, Adelaide City Parklands. Open weekends, school and public holidays, 9am-6pm. Cost: grand course, $39pp, children’s course, $29pp.Details here

4. Fruit picking

There is an abundance of delicious fruit in season at this time of year, so what better way to teach the children about where it all comes from than by picking your own. There’s strawberry picking in Hahndorf (from November to April), cherry picking across the Adelaide Hills (mid-November to mid-January), fig picking at Houghton (February to April) and then going into autumn, apple picking in Lenswood (May).

5. Adventure kayaking

If you want to learn more about our marine life, why not do it from a kayak? The Dolphin Sanctuary Family Tour is suitable for families with children aged 4-8 and runs for 90 minutes and explores mangrove creeks in search of dolphins. Then there’s the three-hour Dolphin Sanctuary and Ships Graveyard Kayak Tour, for families with older children.

6. Adelaide Planetarium

If you having a budding astronomist in the family, let them explore the night sky and the millions of stars and planets that make up our universe at the Adelaide Planetarium. There are plenty of sessions available throughout the school holidays.

7. Snorkelling

Dive into a marine world at the Port Noarlunga Reef Underwater Trail, on the south side of Port Noarlunga Jetty. Families can snorkel with more than 200 species of marine plants and animals, and more than 50 species of fish. The trail has a series of 12 plaques attached to concrete blocks and starts at the end of the Port Noarlunga jetty. It’s free if you have your own gear – or there’s places nearby where you can hire snorkel, mask and flippers from about $20. Details here

8. Urimbirra Wildlife Park

Take a day trip down to Victor Harbor, making sure to stop at the Urimbirra Open-Range Wildlife Park, where you can get up close to a range of Australian animals including kangaroos, koalas, emus and more. While in Victor, make sure to head over to Granite Island and check out the Sculpture Encounters exhibition. There are about 24 sculptures to enjoy as you meander around the island.

Urimbirra is at 10 Welch Rd, Victor Harbor and open daily 10am-5pm, including public holidays. Cost: adults $14, children (4-14 years) $7. For an extra $1, pellets to feed the kangaroos.

9. Adelaide Oval Roof Climb

Feel on top of the world and take in the view of our beautiful city as you make your way along the Adelaide Oval roof, from its western stand across to the southern riverbank stand.

10. Woodhouse Activity Centre

Just a 15 minute drive up the freeway to Woodhouse Activity Centre will get you an adventure like no other. You can choose to visit for the day or extend your time and camp out day to experience all there is to offer from Challenge Hill (with more than 30 obstacles), The Labyrinth (a split level maze), Tube Slides (only open on weekends and public holidays 9.30am-1pm), Disc Golf or Orienteering.

Woodhouse Activity Centre is at 37 Spring Gully Rd, Piccadilly, open seven days (including public holidays) from 9am-5pm. Cost: adults $18, concession $14, children (5-15 years) $12, children under five free. Details here
