Adelaide’s Football Park: update on AAMI Stadium’s WEST housing development

RESIDENTS are poised to move into Adelaide’s Footy Park within months as the first stage of the multimillion-dollar housing development wraps up. We meet a couple who can’t wait – and see what’s next.

PEOPLE will soon be living just a decent drop-kick away from where Tony Modra used to fly skywards for the Crows.

This follows an announcement by the developers that Stage 1 of the former Football Park site at West Lakes is nearing completion.

Project director Chris Menz says owners should be moving in by August.

One of the first couples to move in will be Trish and Todd McFarlane who camped outside the sales centre for a night to become the first buyers of a Central Park home.

Their determination was rewarded with purchase of a prime block.

“Instead of looking at the back of other houses, we have this beautiful park right out the front,” Mr McFarlane said.

This first stage of the massive redevelopment – marketed under the project name of WEST – comprises 62 homes and two apartment blocks.

The second stage of construction, which consists of two more apartment buildings, is already under way.

For the third stage, the $3.5 million Central Park venture, WEST has awarded the contract to Cook Build.

It offers terrace homes priced under $400,000 and aimed at first-home buyers.

The agreement was signed last week, with properties available for sale off the plan from Monday.

“West Lakes has traditionally been a very hard area for first home buyers to buy in, largely because it is such an expensive area,” Mr Menz said.

It was therefore “a real achievement”, he said, to offer quality housing at less than $400,000.

These new homes will be available in either two- or three-bedroom configuration, with their design targeted towards younger buyers.

In the 18 months since WEST was launched, the total value of sales has exceeded $70 million.

Mr Menz said completing Central Park, finalising the time frame of the old stadium’s demolition and realigning Brebner Drive so it runs through the development are priorities over the next 12 months.

Another challenge facing the developers is attracting shops and cafes for the main street which will replace the stadium.
