Tianah Wilton handed a suspended sentence for glassing cousin on night out

A Port Augusta mum who glassed her cousin, leaving her blind in one eye, failed to convince a jury the glass had slipped out of her hand.

Does alcohol make us violent?

A cleaner did not stop to think of the consequences when she glassed her cousin in an impulsive act, leading to serious injuries, a court has heard.

Tianah Emma Kimberly Wilton, 34, failed to convince a jury she acted in self defence when the night out went horribly awry.

The Adelaide District Court heard the victim was Wilton’s cousin, who she had been drinking with on September 13, 2019 in Copley.

The “very intoxicated” victim became abusive towards Wilton.

“You stood and leant across the table and swung or punched your arm into the side of her face,” Judge Ian Press said during sentencing.

The court heard the schooner glass Wilton had in her hand struck the victim.

“The glass connected with her eye and cheekbone and she began bleeding heavily,” Judge Press said.

The victim was flown to Adelaide for treatment.

She suffered a severe rupture of the left eye and has lost sight in that eye.

“The consequences of your actions on that night have had a significant impact on her life,” Judge Press said.

“I am sure you did not intend her to suffer the injuries … in that particular moment, you did not stop to contemplate all of the possible consequences of your act.”

The Port Augusta mother was found guilty at trial of causing harm with intent to cause harm and acquitted of the more serious charge of recklessly causing serious harm.

“Your case at the trial was that you believed the victim was going to hit you and, as you put your own hand up to fend off the expected blow, the glass you were holding slipped out of your hand and hit her in the face,” Judge Press said.

“This version was rejected by the jury. The jury also rejected that you acted in self-defence.”

The court heard Wilton, who had previously worked as a cleaner and as an administrative officer, had aspirations to work in the mining industry.

Judge Press sentenced Wilton to two years and seven months’ jail, with a non-parole period of one year and four months.

“People must know that they are expected to control their tempers and not resort to violence when angry or frustrated,” he said.

The sentence was suspended on a $100, two-year good behaviour bond, with supervision.
