An electrician who was four times the limit left behind a “scene of carnage” when he crashed into a tree, seriously injuring his two passengers.

Brandon Alan Kolyn, 25, avoided jail after he made the foolish decision to drive drunk to another hotel while in a company car.

During sentencing earlier this month, the District Court heard Kolyn was working in Whyalla as an electrician on May 30, 2022.

Crucial components for the work failed to arrive so Kolyn and his colleagues decided to attend the local hotel to pass the time.

The court heard they engaged in a relatively heavy drinking session before Kolyn made the very bad decision to drive.

En route to the next hotel, Kolyn lost control of the car he was driving.

“A witness who observed the collision saw you enter and exit a roundabout that you were attempting to navigate too fast,” Judge Anthony Allen said.

“The witness heard a screeching noise and observed your vehicle mount the median strip and collide with a tree.

“What ensued was a scene of carnage.”

The court heard Kolyn’s blood-alcohol concentration at the time of the collision was approximately 0.2 per cent.

The first victim suffered from bilateral femur fractures, a fractured right pelvis, fractured foot and ankle and fractures to the left ribs and humerus.

The second victim suffered a dislocated hip, broken ribs and a broken tooth, while Kolyn suffered broken ribs and a laceration to his head.

The court heard neither Kolyn nor his passengers had any recollection of the collision.

“Quite plainly, things could have been much worse for everyone on this night,” Judge Allen said.

Kolyn, of Sturt, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated causing harm by dangerous driving.

The court heard Kolyn was deeply remorseful for what he had done, including paying $9000 for the damage caused to the company vehicle he was driving.

Judge Allen said the injuries Kolyn’s victims suffered were significant and he placed other road users at risk by driving with such a high blood-alcohol reading.

“The fact that you were only metres from your accommodation when that decision was made reinforces just how stupid that decision was,” he said.

Judge Allen sentenced Kolyn to three years jail, with a non-parole period of 20 months.

Due to Kolyn’s remorse and full-time employment, the sentence was suspended on a $500, two year good behaviour bond.

Kolyn was also disqualified from driving for four years.
