A pregnant woman who was detained for 13 hours, bashed and robbed has told a court she lives in fear they will come after her again.
Sharon Anne Clancy, 55, and Nicole Marie Bailie, 29, faced sentencing submissions in the District Court on Monday for their roles in the terrifying ordeal.
Ringleaders Daniel Peter Baker, 34, and Vanessa Renae Brewster, 36, and accomplice Rex Lyall Clough, 34, were previously jailed after the victim’s mother had to pay a ransom for her daughter’s safe return.
During Brewster and Baker’s sentencing in February, the District Court heard the victim’s relationship with Baker soured after he demanded money from her.
Baker sent her photos from outside her father’s house, demanding she hand over her car or he would take her father’s vehicle.
When the victim went to Baker’s Elizabeth East house on December 30, 2020, she was led inside by him and Brewster.
Over 13 hours, the victim was assaulted and various threats were made.
The victim was then forced to sign car transfer papers to Baker’s name and her jewellery and phone were also stolen.
Clough arrived at the house and a demand was then made to the victim’s mother to pay $1000 if she ever wanted to see her daughter again.
Baker, of Elizabeth East, pleaded guilty to blackmail, assault causing harm and robbery, while Brewster, of Hillbank, pleaded guilty to assault, robbery and theft.
Clough, of Elizabeth East, pleaded guilty to blackmail.
A victim impact statement was read by prosecutor Amy Fisher on Monday.
The victim said she was 28-weeks pregnant when the offending occurred and she still had nightmares about it.
“How another human can think it’s OK to treat an innocent person the way you treated me is something that I find extremely hard to understand,” she said.
“For the last 23 months and I expect for months to come I have fought away tears, had sleepless nights and live in fear that some day you will come after me again.”
Stacey Carter, for Clancy, told the court her client assisted in removing items from the victim’s car, as well as striking her with a torch.
The court heard Clancy, a heavy methamphetamine user, asked for four points of the drug for her role in the offending.
“Ms Clancy accepts that her behaviour is appalling and she is very genuinely remorseful,” Ms Carter said.
The court heard Clancy’s daughter tragically died last year after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
William Mickan, for Bailie, told the court his client had experienced a significant amount of trauma in her life and turned to drugs to self medicate.
The court heard Bailie, who previously worked as a carpenter, was engaging in rehabilitation services.
Judge Soulio will sentence the women, who both pleaded guilty to robbery, in November.
He indicated he would not impose immediate jail for either defendant.
