The Yorke Peninsula Football League’s top 35 players of 2025 ranked

The Yorke Peninsula Football League season is in full swing and has featured some of SA country’s best footballers, so we’ve ranked the top players in the competition in 2025. See who made the cut.

The Yorke Peninsula Football League has been one of South Australia’s strongest competitions for a number of years and 2025 has again seen a number of stars perform for their clubs.

With the season in full swing, we have consulted league insiders to rank the top 35 players in the competition in 2025.

Here is our list of the league’s top players ranked from 35 to 1.

35. LUKE TRENORDEN

(Central Yorke)

A superstar of the competition, Trenorden would be higher on the list with more games under his belt this year.

Can dominate in the ruck and up front with his aerial ability and efficient ball use.

34. RYLEY MAITLAND

(Moonta)

Much like Trenorden, Maitland has not made many appearances so far this year but still remains as one of the competition’s top players.

Last season’s Mail Medallist, Maitland’s ability to win hard contested ball and distribute well under pressure makes him a major threat.

33. JACK MATCHETT

(CMS Crows)

Matchett joined CMS Crows from Glenunga for this season and has been influential at the back and in the contest.

A strong player overhead and at ground level, Matchett can cut off a number of attacks and is a booming kick.

Has one best player performance in four games.

32. MATT GOLDSWORTHY

(CMS Crows)

The former WWTFC gun joined this hometown club after retiring at the end of last season and has had a positive impact despite only playing three games.

Goldsworthy is a versatile player who can do damage in the contest with his strong build and reliable distribution.

31. DYLAN ALDRIDGE

(Moonta)

Former Mail Medallist Dylan Aldridge has been strong yet again for Moonta.

A tough player inside who can win the footy, lay big tackles, take strong marks and deliver well to teammates.

Has two best player nods and four goals in five games.

30. RILEY DAVEY

(Central Yorke)

A skilled and reliable midfielder, Davey has been a standout for Central Yorke.

Does plenty of the dirty work for the Cougars, winning his own ball and finding teammates with ease by hand or foot.

Has four best player nods and five goals in seven games.

29. JAKE HODBY

(Bute)

Bute’s top forward this season.

Hodby’s ability to burn defenders on the lead, take strong marks and kick bags of goals makes him a constant threat.

Has 26 goals in eight games.

28. TYLER NIELD

A consistent performer for Paskeville this year, Nield has had a major impact for the club around the ground.

Finds plenty of the footy and always makes reliable decisions while under pressure.

Has two best player nods and four goals in five games.

27. WILL SCHULTZ

(Kadina)

A smart and strong defender, Schultz has continued to impress for the Bloods in the YPFL.

Reads the play as well as anyone and creates strong contests in the air and at ground level.

Has four best player nods in seven games.

26. CHRISTIAN IANNELLA

(Bute)

Iannella has been a standout for Bute this season and a big part of the club’s hot early form.

A tireless worker around the ground who creates well for his teammates and has a high footy IQ.

Has five best player nods and five goals in eight games.

25. MATT BARLOW

(Southern Eagles)

Barlow is a rangy defensive utility who hits contests hard in the air or on the ground, can lock down opposition key forwards or move up front to kick goals.

Coming off of a strong 2024 season, the Eagles gun has already had an impact this year with strong marking and efficient ball-use.

Has four best player nods and 11 goals in seven games.

24. ANGUS GLAZBROOK

A reliable forward who has improved his great efficiency in front of the big sticks, Glazbrook has been a standout for CMS up front.

The Crows forward provides a consistent target and has 29 goals and two best player appearances to his name in seven games.

23. MICHAEL VIRGIN

(Moonta)

Former Glenelg gun Virgin has been an important player for the Demons to start this season.

A hard worker through the midfield who does tough work in the contest and always makes good decisions under pressure.

Has four best player nods so far.

22. ISAIAH WILKSCH

(Bute)

An emerging young gun for Bute, Wilksch has continued to impress across the midfield and the flanks.

A fast runner with great skills who can break lines and open up the play with his movement and disposal.

Has three best player nods and seven goals in eight games.

21. ABRAHAM HELFAND

(Paskeville)

One of Paskeville’s top players so far this season.

Helfand can do it all around the ground from winning his own ball to creating for teammates with his disposal.

Has six best player mentions in seven games.

20. PATRICK NEAL-BULLEN

(Southern Eagles)

Brother of AFL premiership player Alex Neal-Bullen, Patrick has been a consistent halfback and midfielder at Southern Eagles.

An efficient user who can open teams up with his damaging boot, Neal-Bullen has four best player nods in six games so far this year.

19. ANGUS HUNTER-PRICE

(Bute)

An emerging star for Bute, Hunter-Price has taken his game to another level for Bute so far this season.

Is a versatile player for the Roosters who does damage in the contest with his ability to find the footy and can also deliver to teammates efficiently or kick goals.

Has five best player mentions and 11 goals in eight games.

18. DOUG GREIG

(Central Yorke)

Former Port District premiership player Doug Greig has been a major boost for Central Yorke this season.

A versatile player who can do damage in the contest, behind the ball and at times up front, Greig has no problem doing what is needed to help his side win.

Has five best player appearances and four goals in seven games.

17. JONTE HUNTER-PRICE

(Bute)

A superstar ruck in the YPFL this season, Hunter-Price continues to impress for Bute.

Hunter-Price often dominates ruck contests to give his midfielders first use and also does damage around the ground as a hardworking big man with reliable skills.

Two best player performances in five games.

16. GILES ELLIS

(Kadina)

Ellis is one of the Bloods’ most versatile players, performing consistently as a midfielder who can also have an impact off of halfback.

The multiple time state country representative has impressive leg speed and has remained one of the best distributors in the YPFL.

Has five best player nods and eight goals in seven games.

15. OTIS CARTHY

(CMS Crows)

A hard and tough player around the ground, former Brighton Bombers captain Otis Carthy has been big for the Crows.

Attacks the footy courageously and wins important possessions for his side while also delivering to teammates with accuracy.

Has six goals and six best player nods in seven games.

14. JARRAD REDDEN

(Southern Eagles)

One of the top rucks in the competition, Redden has been a standout for Southern Eagles again this year.

The former WWTFC premiership star can take over a game with his tapping ability and efficient delivery.

Has four best player nods in four games.

13. TYLER ANDREWS

(Moonta)

Andrews has again solidified himself as one of the league’s top names during the 2024 season.

A strong player who is a tireless worker both in the middle and up front and can dominate the contest in either position.

Has 15 goals and three best player nods in seven games.

12. SAM PFEIFFER

(Ardrossan)

A former key defender at state country level, Pfeiffer has become a versatile and reliable player for Ardrossan.

The club’s playing-coach this season, Pfeiffer can produce at a high level as a centre-half back or centre-half forward, competing well in the air and creating for teammates with ball in hand.

Has four best player nods in seven games.

11. AIDAN TURNER

(Moonta)

A nimble midfielder who is among the YPFL’s best at winning contested footy, Turner has been a weapon for the Demons so far this year.

While his prowess in the middle has been well-known across the league, Turner has also showed the ability to boot goals, kicking four this season to go along with four best player nods so far.

10. ZAC BATES

(Central Yorke)

The former Geelong and West Adelaide gun has been one of the Cougars’ most damaging players with his lethal leg speed and reliable left foot.

Bates plays both midfield and halfback and has been one of the YPFL’s most potent players with ball in hand.

Has four best player nods and 11 goals in seven games.

9. MATT APPLETON

(Moonta)

Appleton has one of the YPFL’s best footy brains, having played with both North Adelaide and Port Adelaide in the SANFL.

A skilled onballer who always seems to find himself in space and with plenty of time with ball in hand, Appleton barely wastes a possession for his side.

Has been among the Demons’ best four times in seven appearances so far.

8. JAKE WESTBROOK

(Kadina)

Westbrook has been dominant so far in season 2025 after a strong 2024 for the Bloods.

The former Woodville-West Torrens and Port Adelaide player has fit Kadina’s line-up like a glove and has often taken control of games as a tough inside player.

Has three best player mentions and 10 goals in five games.

7. NATHAN ALLEN

(Southern Eagles)

Southern Eagles’ captain has been at his best through 2025 so far.

A strong, big bodied midfielder known for his courage in the contest, Allen is an excellent distributer by hand and leads by example each week.

Has four best player nods and six goals in five games.

6. PHOENIX FOSTER

Joining Paskeville this year after time with Geelong, Foster has had an instant impact as a dominant ruck/forward utility.

A strong player with impressive athleticism and aerial ability, Foster can boot goals up front or do damage around the ground in the contest.

Has four best player nods in seven games.

5. FINN BETTERMAN

Former PHOS Camden leader Finn Betterman has been a major part of CMS Crows’ success so far this season.

A versatile player with top drawer skills and a high footy IQ, Betterman does damage in a number of ways.

Has eight goals and six best player mentions in seven games.

4. JAKE TURNER

(Moonta)

One of Moonta’s biggest standouts so far this season.

Turner’s ability to win contested ball, apply strong tackle pressure, deliver efficiently and also hit the scoreboard makes him a standout.

Five best player nods and six goals in five games.

3. SETH HARRIS

(Bute)

A star onballer for Bute this season, Harris has been a major part of his club’s success so far in 2025.

Harris is a strong player who wins the footy courageously and deals to teammates efficiently, Harris can control a game in the contest.

Has seven best player nods in seven games.

2. JACK ELSWORTHY

(Kadina)

Elsworthy has experience with both South Adelaide and Port Adelaide at SANFL level and has been a consistent producer for Kadina in the YPFL.

A small and clever halfback who can also play midfield, Elsworthy is one of the best distributors in the competition and always makes the right decisions.

Has five best player nods in his six 2025 games.

1. TRENT HEFFERNAN

The former SANFL and Port District gun joined Central Yorke after winning a second D1 flag in three years and has been a huge boost for the Cougars this season.

A tough player who covers ground well and wins plenty of his own footy, Heffernan often damages opposition with his work inside and his ability to find teammates with elite distribution.

Has been among his side’s best players in six of seven appearances.
