The Male U19 National Cricket Championships begin today across Adelaide, with Australia’s top young guns ready to battle it out.

The tournament will see all states and territories compete across seven days of play, with a champion to be crowned next Thursday.

Team SA has pulled together a talented group of 14 for the coming week and will be aiming to improve on last season’s performance to win silverware under coach John Palmer.

With the championships in full swing, we’ve listed the young guns who are representing the state now and could be representing the country in the future.

A right-arm medium pace bowler, Arnold has developed strongly in recent seasons to earn his spot in the state side.

The talented quick – who plays for both Sturt and Prince Alfred College – can take wickets consistently for a low return of runs and is also able to produce a handy late total with the bat, achieving 66 in an innings against NSW in last season’s championships.

Arnold will captain the SA U19s.

BRANDON BRAY

(Northern DCC)

A young gun right-arm orthodox spinner, Brandon Bray continues to impress in SACA Premier Cricket.

The crafty bowler has been impressive for Northern Districts in the second grade, posting a career-best performance of 8/42 against East Torrens last season.

He will be a key part of SA’s attack.

HAMISH CASE

A superstar teenager out of Mount Gambier, Case has been one of the most dominant young players in SA.

The Prince Alfred College and Tea Tree Gully District Cricket Club star is a reliable top order batter who can also chip in with the ball, boasting consistent right-arm medium delivery.

REGHARD ELS

(Sturt DCC)

Eels is a dangerous batter who can also bowl effective right-arm medium pace.

The rising star was a standout for Sturt in the U18 shield and second grade last season and has continued to develop this year.

His highest total last campaign was 115 not out against Tea Tree Gully and he would be looking to produce the same level at the crease this week.

TEJAS GILL

Arguably the most talented young cricketer in SA, Gill can do it all and remains a star of the SA lineup.

A consistent left-handed top order batter for Adelaide’s first grade Premier Cricket side and also for Adelaide High School, Gill is no stranger to big totals.

His best Premier Cricket performance this season so far was a 64 total against Tea Tree Gully.

MAX KELLY

(Kensington DCC)

Kelly is a top order batter who looks set for another big season after high production for Kensington District CC’s second grade team last year.

The 18-year-old right-hander should combine well with other top batters like Gill and Els.

WALTER KINLOCK

(Northern DCC)

Right-arm leg spinner Kinlock experienced a breakout year for Northern Districts and the state U19s last season and should repeat the high level of production this week.

The 17-year-old is the youngest member of the U19s this year but remains one of its most dangerous bowlers with his ability to produce a wide variation of spin deliveries.

JACK MATCHETT

EDWARD MILNER

(Prospect DCC)

SA’s wicket keeper for this week’s tournament, Milner has been one of the most reliable youngsters with the bat and behind the stumps in SA.

The Prospect District CC talent – who also plays for Adelaide High School – can consistently make solid totals around the 50-mark and has safe hands and quick reflexes to support his bowlers.

DEAKIN MURPHY

(Woodville DCC)

A product out of Port Pirie, Murphy has been one of Prince Alfred College’s leading wicket-takers in recent years and has also developed well since joining Woodville last season.

Reuther – who has also represented Immanuel – was awarded the SAAS bowler of the year in 2019-20 and has been dominant in local cricket since.

The right-arm medium pacer was one of SA’s best performers in the national tournament last season and should be dangerous yet again.

NICK STATHORIS

(Tea Tree Gully DCC)

Stathoris is one of SA’s fastest bowlers this year and has been in strong form for Tea Tree Gully leading into this week.

The 19-year-old star has taken 13 wickets in five matches for Tea Tree Gully’s first grade this Premier Cricket season.

CAMPBELL THOMPSON

Another fast bowler, Thompson should support Stathoris well with his formidable left arm.

A right-arm fast medium pacer, Weckert has been dominant for Woodville’s second grade side as of late, taking 4/38 against Tea Tree Gully last week.

The 17-year-old is also handy with the bat and can make valuable totals in the middle order.
