SOUTH ADELAIDE 5.9 (39) NORTH ADELAIDE 6.2 (38)

South Adelaide stole a last-gasp, one-point victory with the last kick of the game against North Adelaide at Noarlunga Oval on Friday night.

The Panthers were 29 points down in the second quarter but clawed their way back to claim a 5.9 (39) to 6.2 (38) win.

South’s Hannah Munyard, Teah Charlton and Mykala Walker-Murphy set up the last passage of play, which helped their side triumph, before Nicole Campbell finished it off with a goal just five seconds before the final siren sounded.

It was a disappointing end to the game for the Roosters, who kept South goalless until 13 minutes into the second quarter.

Crows AFLW-listed Nikki Gore led the way for the Panthers with 24 possessions and five tackles.

Czenya Cavouras continued her strong form for the Panthers, collecting 17 touches, while Alana Browne, Jess Kirk, Indy Tahau and Walker-Murphy were the team’s other goalkickers.

Amber Ward, Rheanne Lugg, Sarah Ellis were all solid for North with 15 touches each, while Kelly Barltrop was the team’s multiple goalkicker with two.

NORWOOD 5.12 (42) WOODVILLE-WEST TORRENS 2.2 (14)

Norwood coach Steve Symonds says an attacking game style and a hunger to continually improve is behind his side sitting top and undefeated so far this season.

The Redlegs notched their fourth consecutive victory when they beat Woodville-West Torrens by 28 points at Elizabeth Oval on Friday.

Symonds is expecting West Adelaide to try and stifle his team’s run when the two clubs battle at Norwood Oval this Saturday.

But he was looking forward to the challenge.

“We’ve got a lot of girls who can run quite well and that has helped us,” Symonds said.

“We got beaten in the grand final last year and the girls from that team who have remained with us are pretty determined to get back there again and win.

“But at this stage, the group just wants to improve each week.

“We’ve had a number of teams try to close us down but we are starting to put some measures in to overcome teams who do that against us.

“To be honest, the more the opposition try to close us down, the better we play so we don’t mind if they try to do that.”

Najwa Allen (29 possessions), Hannah Priest (22) and Hannah Dunn (20) were strong for Norwood, while SA basketball great Jo Hill also booted a goal for the Redlegs.

WEST ADELAIDE 2.1 (13) GLENELG 0.3 (3)

West Adelaide coach Shane Moon knows good sides find a way to win and that is what his team did in its game against Glenelg on Friday night.

The Bloods kept the previously undefeated Tigers goalless for the entire match and grinded out a 10-point victory at Richmond Oval.

The pressure from both sides was immense as both sides combined 138 tackles between them.

But with the frequency of stoppages came very few shots on goal – West and Glenelg only had three each.

Rebecca Owen (21 disposals), Abbie Ballard (17), Madison Newman (16), and skipper Lauren Rodato (12) were the Bloods’ main contributors.

Moon said he was not too fussed with the scrappy contest and was pleased the Bloods got the win.

“It was a grind,” Moon said.

“It was very tight, contested football all night.

“We told our players before the game that it would be about tackle pressure, forcing turnovers and putting the opposition under pressure, then from that win the ball and score.

“We probably didn’t score as much as we would like but a win is a win.

“To win ugly, we are happy with that.”

Emma Smith and Alexandra Mason were the goalkickers.

Glenelg coach Jason Fairall believed the league-wide bye during the Adelaide Cup long weekend halted his side’s momentum.

“We had the shackles put on us and that’s credit to West,” Fairall said.

“Even when we looked like we were starting to get going we struggled to put that in to any scoreboard pressure.

“I was quite worried about the bye and when it came, particularly on National Women’s Day, I thought it was quite poor we didn’t have a game on that Friday.

“I felt like we lost a bit of momentum from that. We know we’ve got a lot of things to work on but I think we actually learnt more from the loss than we did from our three wins.”

CENTRAL DISTRICT 5.5 (38) STURT 3.4 (22)

Central District proved the league-wide bye was not going to halt its momentum, winning 5.8 (38) to 3.4 (22) against Sturt at Elizabeth Oval on Friday night.

The Bulldogs have bounced back from a tough start to their inaugural campaign with two losses to string two consecutive victories together, against Woodville-West Torrens and the Double Blues.

But the win against Sturt did not come without a fight.

The hosts went into three-quarter time 33 points ahead before the visitors kicked three unanswered goals, only to be beaten by the final siren.

Crows AFLW-listed players Jessica Sedunary (17 disposals, one goal) and Katelyn Rosenzweig (2.4) were best afield for the Bulldogs.

Demi Sonneman (16 touches) and youngster Laitiah Huynh (14) also worked hard.

Central plays North Adelaide at Norwood Oval this Saturday.

Sophie Hoyle (26 touches) was the highest possession-getter for Sturt.
