Salisbury North v Sacred Heart OC R13 highlights

A contender has well and truly asserted itself in division two of the Adelaide Footy League.

Sacred Heart Old Collegians has just had three massive weeks and broke some club records in the process, the latest a thumping of a fallen early season favourite.

Plus the top tier finals fight is heating up and more in Messenger’s match reports from every division after round 13.

DIVISION TWO

Sacred Heart Old Collegians is giving its stats people plenty of work to do as far as its old records are concerned.

Top-placed SHOC did a number on Salisbury North with a blistering 26.12 (168) to 4.10 (34) at Salisbury North Oval last Saturday.

While the club believes its round 11 effort to hold Gaza to 1.3 was a record low over the Eagles, it was not clear where Saturday’s score sat in its record books.

But the huge total and its 12-goal third quarter against Salisbury North was believed among SHOC’s best efforts.

“Our sides traditionally don’t normally come out here and win that well so from that angle it was a very good effort,” SHOC coach Stephen Kay said.

“Both our pressure and style of play was what we are looking for. It was a good day.’’ Myponga recruit Tom Carroll, Nick Forster and Michael Teal were influential for SHOC.

Kay’s side has been on top form the past three weeks, catapulting to second spot just one point behind ladder leaders Unley Mercedes.

SHOC smashed Gaza by 84 points before handing the Jets a four point loss in round 12, their second loss of the season, and then belting the Hawks last Saturday on their own deck.

Salisbury North’s once promising season is now looking a little tougher.

The early season favourites began the campaign with a 5-1 record but have lost their past three matches.

Unley Mercedes responded to the previous week’s loss and held its slim ladder advantage over SHOC by getting over PHOS Camden at Kingswood Oval on Saturday.

Neither side could gain a serious hold on the match all day before the hosts eventually prevailed 9.11 (65) to 8.8 (56).

Jets utility Josh Stevens starred for the second successive week while Hamish Gordon booted three goals for the Phantoms.

PHOS is still in the mix to make the finals, despite the loss, in sixth place and one point behind fifth side Seaton Ramblers.

Athelstone is third and making a serious play for September itself.

The Raggies won their fifth game in a row when they easily accounted for struggling Gaza at home, 17.13 (115) to 7.8 (50).

Athelstone are just one win adrift of SHOC.

Kyle Durdin was best for the hosts, while Chris Radetti was unstoppable up-forward, booting five goals.

Josh Schinella was also solid, finishing with three majors.

Payneham Norwood Union flew the flag proudly in an emotional win over Port District at home in division one on Saturday.

Wearing black armbands, the Falcons fought a tough battle against the Magpies and came out on top, 7.18 (60) to 6.13 (49).

PNU booted 4.5 to 0.3 in the opening term before Port roared back into the contest and pushed the hosts right to the finish.

The result kept the Falcons in equal second on the ladder alongside Rostrevor Old Collegians.

Port District, fifth, finds itself in the thick of the action as the charge to the major round continues.

Magpies coach Simon Maddern said a slow start made it tough for his team.

“The first quarter proved our undoing, conceding four goals against the breeze,’’ Maddern said.

“After that we played some solid footy but struggled to hit the scoreboard.

“SPOC for us after the bye will be another big one.’’

Rostrevor Old Collegians showed it was not only a powerful attacking unit on Saturday but a team capable of squeezing the life out of its opponent when they try to move forward.

That skill was on show when ROC outgunned St Peters Old Collegians at home, 14.13 (97) to 5.4 (34).

“I thought that was nearly as good as we have played all season,’’ ROC coach Will O’Malley said.

“During the week we talked about how important this game was. It was important we didn’t turn up in second gear.”

Luke Manuel, Patrick Dawson (five goals) starred.

A poor third quarter cost Tea Tree Gully a chance of victory against Adelaide University away on Saturday and worsened its fears of relegation.

The visitors scored just one point in the third stanza compared to the hosts’ 3.1 to go down 9.8 (62) to 7.9 (51).

Eighth-placed Uni is now two wins clear of the Wolves and Henley in the relegation zone with five rounds remaining.

The Blacks managed to back up their win against Goodwood Saints at Goodwood Oval a feat they achieved for the first time in 13 years.

Dylan Schoenmakers was solid for the Wolves, finishing with three goals, while Hamish Crouch was best-on-ground for the Blacks.

Division one will have a bye this weekend but all other divisions will continue as normal.

OTHER RESULTS:

■ Prince Alfred OC 13.8 (86) d Brighton Bombers 8.13 (61)

The Rams were too good for the Reds in the highly anticipated clash at Webb Oval, holding them at bay all day in the 11.11 (77) to 9.10 (64) victory.

Nick Wundke booted four goals for the 2018 division four premiers while key men Alex Haren and Sam Wundke played pivotal roles.

Simon Yiannicou fought hard for Flinders Park.

North Haven kept itself in the mix for a double chance in the division three major round when it proved too strong for local rival Portland at Port Reserve.

Sam Tylor led the way for the Magpies in their 15.14 (104) to 9.9 (63) triumph, which drew them level with third-placed Old Ignatians on the ladder.

The Lions triumphed 12.6 (78) to 9.16 (70) over the fifth-placed Cats for their first victory since round three.

Hunter Bennett starred for Colonel Light Gardens while Liam Wood had a strong showing for Woodville South.

The Lions, bottom of the ladder, now have a very slim hope of avoiding the drop as they trail Walkerville, Pembroke Old Scholars and Pooraka by three wins, but will need to get a move on.

CBC Old Collegians knocked top-placed Edwardstown of its perch in a crucial clash at Edwardstown Oval.

The Dolphins prevailed 15.13 (103) to 11.7 (73), which moved them to second on the ladder and knocked the Towns down to third.

The Demons trailed by 20 points at the first change before the Kookaburras put their foot down and kicked 10 goals to five in the next three quarters for a 15.9 (99) to 7.6 (48) victory.

Andrew Liverton and Jordan Wilson-King booted four majors each for Kenilworth.

The result gives the Kookaburras a one-win buffer over second-placed Hope Valley on the ladder.

Salisbury struck a big blow in the finals race with a late goal to defeat Smithfield at home.

The 13.8 (86) to 12.9 (81) win means the Magpies are equal with Lockleys and Eastern Park in fourth spot, but behind on percentage.

Both sides are well clear of winless side O’Sullivan Beach Lonsdale, which is anchored at the foot of the ladder.

West Croydon came up trumps in a top-of-the-table battle against Hectorville, winning 15.8 (98) to 7.6 (48) at Fawk Reserve.
