SA football most goals 2021: Johnny Boras, Josh Scott, Alex Forster and Johann Wagner among race to 100

A handful of local footy stars are edging closer to the magical 100-goal mark – including an ex-AFL listed player who has booted 72 in eight games.

Gun local footy forwards are closing in on the magical 100-goal mark as the race to reach the ton first in SA heats up.

While Covid shortened seasons prevented players from achieving the feat in 2020, a handful of goal kickers could do so in the coming weeks.

River Murray Football League spearhead Johnny Boras’ 81 majors for Imperial leads the charge among A grade suburban and country competitions.

The ex-North Adelaide man is averaging 6.75 goals per game and should reach the ton in one of the Blues’ four remaining minor round matches.

Just one behind is his league rival Josh Scott (Jervois) and Adelaide Footy League standout forward Alex Forster (Pembroke Old Scholars).

However Boras has an opportunity to extend his lead this weekend – at least over Scott.

The former Glenelg goal kicker will not take the field this Saturday as the Bluds’ fixture against Tailem Bend has been called off due to Covid exposure sites in the region.

A draw has been called in all round 15 games between the two clubs.

Boras would hope to capitalise on Scott’s absence when Imperial faces Ramblers, who he booted 12 goals against last time out.

Trailing the leading trio in the race is a pair well known in SA footy circles.

Former Port Adelaide-listed player Johann Wagner – the winner of 2014 Foxtel reality series The Recruit – has booted a staggering 72 majors in just eight games for Cummins Kapinnie in the Great Flinders Football League.

The 30-year-old is averaging nine per match and has reached double figures four times this season.

He moved to the Cougars from hometown club Tasman in the off-season.

Wagner is joined on 72 majors by journeyman Gene Robinson, who is now plying his trade at Western Border club Millicent.

The former Crows SANFL top-up player has kicked more than 100 goals in a season three times before – once at Mypolonga and twice with Mannum.

He also bagged 97 in 2019 for Broughton-Mundoora, which he left at the end of last year to join Millicent.

Next in the race is Walkerville’s Adam Proud on 66 goals as he looks to take the fight to Forster in the Adelaide Footy League’s division four.

Mount Compass superboot Tom Pinyon – whose 129 majors for the Bulldogs led the state in 2019 – is not far behind with 63 this season.

Elizabeth youngster Jarad Clinton (56) and Seaton Ramblers’ Brett Harland (54) would need their sides to go on deep finals runs to make the ton by year’s end.
