From the quirky to the inspirational, the weird, wonderful and everything in between here are the things which caught our eye in round 13:
WHEN THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY
When Broadview coach Nathan Grainger threw a young defender forward on Saturday to make an impact with the game on the line, he did not expect what would come next.
Will Scadden – playing just his second A grade match for the Tigers – rose high and pulled down a hanger well worthy of a highlight reel.
While they could not manage to get over the line against division two rival Scotch Old Collegians, the screamer managed to put a smile on the faces of the Broadview faithful.
And it was captured perfectly by club photographer Matt Oborn and the Adelaide Footy League TV cameras at Broadview Oval.
Grainger had a good view of the grab from the Tigers’ bench and described it as “freaky”.
“Will’s actually a defender and we threw him forward to put some pressure on because we were a bit up against it,” Grainger said.
“He’s probably done it a hundred times in the park with his mates but to pull one off like that in front of a decent crowd is something else.
“If he had kicked the goal that would have topped it off.
“He basically got up and then the guy gave him an extra lift to put him even higher. It was freaky.”
The mark earned the youngster a nomination for the round 13 mark of the week, which you can vote on below.
Scadden, who has also made seven appearances for North Adelaide’s under-18s this year, managed to kick two goals as the Tigers went down 15.7 (97) to 12.12 (84).
Grainger said fifth-placed Broadview had experienced an injury affected campaign in 2021 with four to five changes each week in the senior side.
The Tigers have a crucial contest up next when they face sixth-ranked Henley away this Saturday.
“Henley, like us, are battling to make finals and it’s always a tough journey out there,” Grainger said.
“We’ve learnt anybody is beatable in this division … we’ve got no choice but to win from here on out in the season.”
MARKS AND GOALS OF THE WEEK
This season the Adelaide Footy League has partnered up with The Advertiser and Messenger to crown the best mark and best goal of 2021.
Every week you can find the top three of each from the round here in the One-Percenters column.
Vote in the poll for your favourite.
At the end of the year the top marks and goals will go in the running to be named the best of the season with an overall vote decided by you.
KAIPARA KICKS 16
You would think kicking 16 goals would be enough for best on ground.
Not in the case of Modbury’s Daniel Kaipara.
The forward was the latest player to have a day out in division three against battling bottom side Portland as the Hawks piled on 45.13 (283) to 2.4 (16) at Port Reserve.
Kaipara booted 16 majors but it was not enough to earn the full votes according to his coach.
That honour went to Matt Fogden, who we can only assume was the one feeding Kaipara all day.
Former North Adelaide key forward Liam Verity and Jake Philips added five goals each for the Hawks while Dan Horsnell (four), Jake Bowman (three), Bradley Vassal and Bradley Rogers (two) also hit the scoreboard.
The 283-point total was the biggest score Portland has conceded this year in a tough campaign.
However, we have to give credit to the Thunder who continue to show up each week in both the A and B grade.
Here’s hoping they can get back on track soon.
BACK IN BURGUNDY
It is usually a bit of a clash when the black and white of Payneham Norwood Union and Port District face off in division one.
On Saturday however, the Falcons solved the problem when they rolled out in heritage guernseys on their trip down to Largs Reserve.
Wearing the burgundy and gold of Payneham – which merged with Norwood Union in 1995 to form the current club – the Falcons comfortably took care of the Magpies by 60 points.
Star spearhead Liam Davis might be one PNU player keen to wear the throwback strip again after he recorded six goals for the third match this season.
The ex-Norwood forward has 11 goals in his past two and is looking dangerous as the Falcons march towards finals.
SPLIT ROUND
If you’re planning on heading along to a division one match this Saturday make sure you check the fixture because it could be the following week.
The top flight will have a split round this weekend, allowing the grand final to be played a week later than divisions two to seven.
This Saturday, Rostrevor Old Collegians and Payneham Norwood Union will do battle in the match of the day while Unley Mercedes and Port District face off as well as Adelaide University and Tea Tree Gully.
Then, on July 24, Prince Alfred Old Collegians and Goodwood Saints will clash in a highly-anticipated contest and St Peter’s will host Brighton.
