Rostrevor Old Collegians is roaring and ready for its top-of-the-table battle with Prince Alfred Old Collegians after beating Henley.

Plus all the results from other divisions in Messenger Community News’ round nine match reports.

DIVISION ONE

Rostrevor Old Collegians faces a key test when it meets Prince Alfred Old Collegians in a top-of-the-table clash at Park Nine, says ROC playing coach Will O’Malley.

“This will be a big game for both sides and we just have to be ready to go,” O’Malley said.

“It could well be a season-defining game.”

ROC finetuned for its coming top-tier challenge when it put away Henley 19.14 (128) to 10.11 (71) at Campbelltown Memorial Oval last Saturday.

O’Malley said the victory was solid but the team would need to lift a cog or two this week.

“Henley acquitted themselves very well, especially in the third quarter,’’ O’Malley said.

“We stuck to our task well and our last quarter was very good but we will need to again this week.’’

Michael Coad booted seven goals for ROC.

Henley could welcome back Corey Cray and Harry Jessen as well as a couple of others who missed last week’s loss.

Sharks coach Jarrad Parker said the effort against ROC was reasonable.

“Early I thought we didn’t come to play and I asked for a response but that third quarter with 11 scoring shots was one of our best for the season,’’ Parker said.

“We were down to 19 players at quarter time through injury and 18 into the last so overall it wasn’t too bad an effort.

“We hope to get a few key players back this week which should help.’’

Jack Enright, Nathan Bowles and Ben Lodge (three goals) played strongly, while debutant Jack Hambly showed promise with three goals.

Grit and desire played a big part in St Peter’s Old Collegians’ come-from-behind victory against Adelaide University at University Oval last Saturday.

The Saints trailed by 20 points midway through the third quarter but willed themselves over the line 13.9 (87) to 12.4 (76).

SPOC coach Geoff Riddle was relieved his side rallied under pressure.

“It was really an arm-wrestle for three quarters but getting that momentum in the third quarter and the last (quarter) was the key,” Riddle said.

“We really just hung in there and overran them from 20 points down.

“This was really important so it could set us up going forward.’’

Best for SPOC were Toby Kelly, Tom Matsouliadis, Jesse O’Brien (three goals) and Hamish Allan.

James McLeay also kicked four majors for SPOC.

Edward Dadds was solid for Adelaide University, while Lewis Parker and Ben Adams were also strong.

Port District coach Simon Maddern hailed the effort of his captain Trent Heffernan after an inspirational game in the Magpies’ 48-point win against Goodwood Saints at home.

The Magpies entered the match in fifth, while the Saints were sixth but they were level on four wins.

Port took charge after quarter-time to account for the Saints 13.18 (96) to 7.6 (48), moving to two points plus nearly nine per cent clear of the Saints and Brighton.

“We played four quarters of consistent football,” Maddern said.

“The boys were switched on from the start and although we didn’t convert our opportunities overly well we had control of the game.

“We had lots of good contributors from players all over the ground but our captain Trent Heffernan was outstanding with four goals and relentless pressure.’’

Best for the Magpies were Heffernan, Ben Gould and James Batty (three goals).

Prince Alfred Old Collegians held top place on the ladder after beating Payneham Norwood Union by 19 points away on Saturday.

The Bombers finished solidly to take the match,

Brighton coach Joel Tucker was pleased to tick off another first for his team.

“I don’t think any of us had been out there, let alone played on the ground so that was pleasing to come away with a win,” Tucker said.

“We knew it was going to be tough and they were very strong.”

Veteran Ben Brookman was solid in defence for the visitors.

DIVISION TWO

Salisbury North coach Joe Hay watched his side draw for the second time in three weeks.

The Hawks trailed Seaton Ramblers by 18 points at the 20-minute mark of the last quarter at Pedlar Reserve on Saturday, before booting three majors to level the scores 13.11 (89).

A bemused Hay said his side was fortunate to escape with a draw.

“We didn’t use the ball very well and didn’t play our best,’’ Hay said.

“We locked them down at the stoppages after an open first quarter but being a small ground it was fairly easy to score.

“It was disappointing not to play with the intensity we can but in the end we were lucky to steal a point even though we had the chance to win.’’

Josh Russo, Bradyn Lehman and Jake Russo were solid for the Hawks, while Solly (three goals) and Sharpe (two goals) led the scorers.

Bradyn Wild, Lleyton Hedges (seven goals) and Matthew Johncock played well for Seaton.
