DIVISION ONE
Brighton dug deep to claim its second top-five scalp in three weeks as it held out Port District at Brighton Oval last Saturday.
The Bombers triumphed 11.8 (74) to 8.13 (61).
The victory led to Brighton heading into the competition-wide bye with three wins and in eighth place on the ladder.
Bombers coach Joel Tucker was proud of his team’s approach.
“This win has to be right up there,” Tucker said.
“It just instils belief in the group.
“The challenge for us is to produce our good form week after week, but the group knows we can match the good sides.’’
Tarquin Brown led the way for Brighton with five goals, while Luke Bonfiglio and John McPherson were also solid.
Port coach Simon Maddern said the side never settled.
“Unfortunately we didn’t bring our best and in this competition the result doesn’t come if you’re not at your best,” Maddern said.
“We couldn’t get our attacking game going and we failed to put scoreboard pressure on.”
Goodwood Saints head in to the long weekend break with winning form and a belief they can be a major player.
The club took the points over St Peter’s Old Collegians, 9.11 (65) to 6.15 (51) at Goodwood Oval last Saturday.
Goodwood now has four wins from eight matches this season and each victory has been recorded at home.
Its coach, Adam Jeffries, was relieved his side was able to pull through in the battle of the Saints after leading 3.2 to 1.3 and 5.4 to 4.3 at the first two breaks before trailing 5.12 to 5.8 at the last change.
“Again, it was a real arm-wrestle and a pressure game with nothing pretty,” Jeffries said.
“It was nice to win at home again but we have to start finding a few wins away from home.’’
Best for Goodwood included Jack Carter, Tom Carter and Jakob Heitmann.
Henley won’t be hitting the panic button as it struggles to stay afloat following a tough start to the top tier, says coach Jarrad Parker.
Despite some solid efforts in most games the Sharks sit bottom with a 1-8 record.
Henley matched second-placed Payneham Norwood Union for a half at home before being outpointed 14.13 (97) to 6.4 (40).
Parker said turnovers again hurt his side.
“The first half was quite good although we made a couple of skill errors just before half time,” Parker said.
“We fell in to the trap of inconsistency, combined with some of their bigger bodies catching us out.
“We seem to get goals scored quickly against us, so we are going to use a training night to have a few pizzas and have a look at some of the vision behind the goal to see why that is happening.’’
Charlie Morrison, Lachlan Ryan and James Lean led the way for Henley, while Ben Lodge kicked three goals.
Liam Davis (six goals), Jack O’Leary and Jameson Bower led the way, for the Falcons, while ex-Norwood player Alex Forster continued his strong form kicking three goals.

The result was set up with seven goals in the third quarter from the Old Reds.
Wolves coach Justin Maschotta said his young side was given a tough lesson.
“Our first half wasn’t good, we sat back and just made too many mistakes,” Maschotta said. “Our best is good but we are too up and down and that’s what happens when you are missing 14 premiership players from the side.”
Carlos Buccini battled hard for the visitors as did Nickolas Thomson and Chad Schoenmakers.
Jake Pitt was the star for the hosts with six goals, while Adam Perryman, Hayden Jolly and Mitchell Wicks also performed well.
DIVISION TWO
Salisbury North’s persistence and ability to make the most of key moments proved the answer when it edged out Athelstone at home on Saturday.
Hawks coach Joe Hay said the 12.10 (82) to 11.9 (75) win was another challenge met.
“We had a slow start but their (Athelstone) pressure was good,” Hay said.
“Our guys were able to turn it around again and our ability to move the ball better and lift at the stoppages was a key.
“If you would have said at this stage of the season we would be sitting second, we would have taken that.”
Paul Dreimann, Richardson, Corey Reichert and Jake Russo starred for the Hawks, as did Steven Evans in his first A-grade game this season.
Luke Rander was the visitors’ best in front of goals, booting six majors, while Alex Davies finished with two.

The Jets still hold top spot with a 6-1-1 record and superior percentage to second-placed Salisbury North.
