Old Ignatians takes almost three quarters to kick a goal in Adelaide Footy League

They say bad kicking is bad footy and one Adelaide Footy League side has learnt that lesson the hard way after booting a ridiculous number of behinds before getting a goal.

Iggies kick 0.15 before first goal

Here are some things that caught our eye in round seven:

IGGIES START WITH 15 BEHINDS

There is inaccurate kicking and then there is Old Ignatians’ effort against Flinders Park in division three on Saturday.

Iggies, the top side in the third tier, failed to slot a goal until the 21st minute of the third quarter and booted a putrid 15 consecutive behinds in the process at Flinders Park Oval.

While the wet and windy weather on Saturday was not ideal, it was no excuse for this sort of performance in front of the big sticks.

Sam Boots, pictured below, finally got the goal umpire to wave two flags instead of one when he snapped truly from a ball-up.

It took 71 minutes of game time.

Iggies kicked six behinds in the first quarter, added four in the second and another five in the third.

Unsurprisingly, Old Ignatians lost – 7.9 (51) to 3.16 (34) – but could have easily taken home the chocolates after recording more scoring shots.

Boots kicked a second for Iggies and Liam Scanlon slotted a third in an accurate 2.1 fourth quarter.

Old Ignatians’ B grade kicked a more respectable 6.8 (44), but also lost, and its Cs won with 10.9 (69).

It is fair to say there will be plenty of goalkicking practise at Karen Rolton Oval this week for the ladder-leading A grade before they take on Golden Grove this Saturday.

For the Reds, Lachlan Fairall was best on ground and Cameron Miller matched the entire opposition in booting three goals.

Flinders Park is fourth on the ladder in a tightly-contested division three.

WHAT A DRAW DOES

A draw is a tough result to swallow in sport at any level and usually leaves an empty feeling among players.

Salisbury North and Unley players felt exactly that when their division two clash at Salisbury Oval ended 11.3 (69) to 10.9 (69) on Saturday.

As seen in the video below, one Hawk was visibly exhausted and fell to the ground as the siren sounded.

Agony as match ends in draw

Salisbury North led 9.2 to 4.7 at the last change but Unley stormed back to kick six of the first seven goals of the fourth quarter.

With rain bucketing down in a fluctuating final term, the home side trailed by five points, then regained the lead before the Jets scored a point.

The result meant Unley walked away unbeaten, while the Hawks were one win away in second place.

Salisbury North coach Joe Hay said he and the players treated the result more like a loss.

ONE-POINT WINNERS AGAIN

It was a more cheerful scene at Glandore Oval when Westminster Old Scholars snuck a one-point win at home for the second time this season.

The Dragons edged out Portland in a back-and-forth division three contest to triumph 12.8 (80) to 11.13 (79).

Some key marks in defence from Westminster helped it hold on against the unlucky Thunder side, who have also had several close results so far.

Scott Blesing led the way for the Dragons, while Jack Verbena (four goals) and Blake Read (three) were strong in attack.

Ian Milera, recruited from Glenelg last month, kicked four majors for the Thunder to continue his strong form.

Dale Finnie was named Portland’s best.

In round three, the Dragons got over Golden Grove by a single point after the Kookaburras missed a shot after the siren to win the game.

DISTRICT D

Port District is a club that appears to be going from strength to strength and it has now got t an extra side.

The Magpies possess a deep playing list and with numbers flowing over from their C grade, they entered a D-grade team in the C3 competition, which previously had just nine teams.

The new Port outfit made a strong start, thumping local rivals Portland 19.15 (129) to 5.5 (35) at Largs Reserve.

District is also top of the ladder in C1 and division one reserves, while its A grade is fifth in the highly-competitive top flight.

Magpies coach Simon Maddern said Saturday was a great day for the club.

“We actually introduced a new team into the C3 competition as well and they won,” Maddern said.

“As a club that made it four wins from four games.’’

MITCHELL GETS EXTRA ATTENTION

Darren Mitchell was always going to be a target for defenders after making news across the country with his 32-goal haul for Hope Valley last week.

Mitchell’s C5 Demons again won comfortably, 19.13 (127) to 1.1 (7) away against Salisbury, but the big full forward managed a comparably small return of four majors this week.

The Magpies’ defence also kept the 33-year-old to a single goal earlier this month – they must be his bogey side.

Unsurprisingly, Mitchell is still on track for a 100-goal season with 62 after six matches.
