Prince Alfred Old Collegians sign Jack Trengove for 2020 Adelaide Footy League division one season

Jack Trengove has signed at a new club for 2020 and a shot at winning a flag with old school mates is central to the former Melbourne captain and Port Adelaide midfielder’s decision.

Jack Trengove gets told he will debut for Port Adelaide

A shot at winning a flag with old school mates is central to former Melbourne captain and Port Adelaide midfielder Jack Trengove’s decision to play at Prince Alfred Old Collegians next season.

The 28-year-old, 89-game AFL player will line up for the Adelaide Footy League grand finalists after weighing up his options following the Power’s decision to delist him.

Trengove said the opportunity to pull on the Old Reds guernsey alongside his mates from PAC was one he could not pass up.

But the No.2 pick at the 2009 national draft said focusing on full-time work and less on football commitments was also a factor in choosing to play locally.

“There’s something about playing with your old school mates and going down that path and really enjoying it from that point of view again is something I’ve been very passionate about,”

said Trengove, who is working as an analyst with Lanyon Asset Management.

“I’m at the stage in my career now where I’m looking to concentrate more on work outside of football.

“Now I’ve got a chance to play with some of the school mates I played with 10 or so years ago – it was too good an opportunity to pass up.

“In the end that’s what the decision boiled down to.”

Trengove considered playing in the SANFL but decided the time commitment would be too much while trying to pursue his career outside of football.

PAOC made the division one grand final in September but went down to Payneham Norwood Union.

In that losing side were a number of Trengove’s close friends, including Craig Pitt, Tom and Mitch Wicks, Tom Brinsley and Will Dalwood.

“About half the team (are mates),” joked Trengove, who was the youngest skipper in AFL/VFL history when he co-captained the Demons with Jack Grimes in 2012.

“This year whenever I wasn’t playing I would go out there and watch them.

“It was like old times and they looked like they were having a lot of fun out there.

“The boys obviously lost the granny the year just gone so they’ve got some extra motivation to get success and I’m certainly wanting to jump in and try to help them get that.

“No doubt there’s some competitive juices that still remain that you want to play at the top level, but I’m just looking forward to going back and playing with some old school mates and having a bit of fun with it.”

Trengove will undoubtedly have a big impact on the competition, coming off a season in the SANFL where he finished equal-equal fifth in the Magarey Medal and won the Magpies best and fairest.

The Naracoorte-born midfielder had an AFL career hindered by injury at the Demons before he joined Port as a delisted free agent after the 2017 season.

He played three AFL games for the Power in 2018 but could not manage to break into the side this season and said he “saw the writing on the wall” earlier in the year.

“I’m really content with where I’m at and ready to move onto the next phase and concentrate more work away from football,” Trengove said.

“I got to live my childhood dream playing AFL footy for 10 years, now I’m genuinely excited to get cracking on my next career.”
