Tyson Goldsack has played 165 games for Collingwood and won an AFL premiership with the Magpies, now he will be pulling on the boots locally in the Adelaide Footy League next season.

Goldsack pleads with Victorians to get behind Collingwood at the grand final

St Peter’s Old Collegians has completed one of the signing coups of the local footy off-season with 165-game Collingwood veteran Tyson Goldsack joining the club.

SPOC announced Thursday that the 32-year-old Magpies premiership utility had joined the division one Adelaide Footy League club after retiring from the AFL at the end of the season.

Goldsack, who revealed in August he would be relocating to Adelaide with his family, was a member of the 2010 Collingwood premiership team and also played in the losing 2018 grand final.

A connection to the club through Goldsack’s wife, Chelsea, started conversations between the two parties and led to him signing a one-year deal at Caterer Oval.

Chairman Guy Roberts said Goldsack had tremendous character and was excited for what he would bring to SPOC.

“We’re thrilled to have him at our club and it’s a credit to the Adelaide Footy League and division one that a player with Tyson’s credentials wants to join,” Roberts said.

“We’re looking for him to be someone who can add to our club off the field as well as on it, and develop our young group of players.”

Goldsack, born and raised in Victoria, was drafted by Collingwood in 2006.

He was one of the feel-good stories of the 2018 season after he recovered from a knee reconstruction to make the team for the finals and the losing decider.

The Gippsland Power product failed to add to his AFL games tally in 2019 but made 17 VFL appearances.

He announced his retirement from the AFL in August, saying “football’s grim reaper got me”.

Goldsack’s arrival is a massive boost for SPOC, which finished fourth on the ladder in division one this season before going down to Rostrevor Old Collegians in the first semi-final.

Coach Geoff Riddle said Goldsack would be important for the club’s youth.

“We’ve got a young list, so we were really targeting some experience be a mentor and leader,” Riddle said.

“I’ve only spoken briefly to him about on-field stuff at this stage but I would expect him to play in a bunch of different positions for us.

“You might see him in defence, forward or maybe in the midfield.”

Riddle will take charge of SPOC for a second season after a successful debut in the top tier in 2019.
