PARA HILLS 4
SOUTH ADELAIDE 1
Para Hills coach Barney Smith reckons you could not have scripted it any better as Matthew “Munch” Marchioro scored the final goal of the game in a 4-1 victory over South Adelaide to cap off his 200th match.
The Knights moved up to seventh on the table and extended their unbeaten run to five with the victory at the Paddocks on Saturday.
South Adelaide came into the game with plenty of confidence after winning their first game of the season the previous week.
And the Panthers got off to a great start, scoring via a penalty awarded in the 22nd minute, which Smith described as “soft”.
The home side then rallied and netted 17 minutes later when Hirofumi Kochi headed home a great cross.
Mohammad Sumaoro made it 2-1 it first-half stoppage time after some “individual brilliance”, according to Smith, as he beat three players and slotted it past the keeper.
Thilo Wilke then scored in the 65th minute from just outside the box after cutting in onto his right and curling it into the top corner.
It was party time when Marchioro, a six-time best and fairest winner, headed the ball in from close range after a free kick.
The Para Hills coach was full of praise for his team and the milestone man they affectionately call “Munch”.
“To play 200 senior Premier League matches at the same club is pretty rare these days, so credit to Munch, it is huge for him,” Smith said.
“You couldn’t script it any better. For Munch to score the final goal of the game and for all the boys to play so well today, it is a credit to them all.”
South coach Ben Dale described his team’s loss as its worst performance of the year and said his side simply did not show up.
“I am gutted and disappointed,” Dale said.
“It was such a chalk and cheese performance from the week before when we were so good against Adelaide United.
“Full credit to Para Hills … but we were not even a shadow of what we were the week before and I am at a loss to understand why.”
ADELAIDE BLUE EAGLES 1
ADELAIDE UNITED YOUTH 0
Adelaide Blue Eagles assistant coach Danny Barone praised his team’s defence as he club defeated Adelaide United youth 1-0 at the Parks on Saturday.
The first half was an arm-wrestle and Blue Eagles were able to score in injury time when Evan Kounavelis netted his fourth goal of the season.
“We played a very smart game,” Barone said.
“We let them have possession at the back and waited for them to make turnovers and we were able to score the first goal just before half-time.
“I thought we defended really well and we were very patient.”
The victory meant Blue Eagles maintained top spot on the table.
WEST ADELAIDE 1
ADELAIDE OLYMPIC 1
West Adelaide coach Steve DeGiovanniello described the 1-1 draw with Adelaide Olympic at the Parks on Friday night as a fair result.
It was a game of two halves with Olympic controlling the early proceedings.
They were rewarded a penalty in the 29th minute which was finished off by Christos Pounendis.
Hellas responded after the break and were not able to make the most of their chances, until being given a penalty of their own in the 90th minute.
Matt Bouraee was fouled by his Olympic opponent and converted from the spot to equalise for his side.
DeGiovanniello was a relieved man after the game as he thought his team may not get rewarded for the opportunities they created in the second half.
Hellas remained 10th on the table and Olympic eighth.
“We were hoping for a win and we had more opportunities than them today particularly in the
second half, and was good to take a valuable point,” DeGiovanniello said.
“It was probably a game of two halves, they were better in the first half and we were much better in the second. The draw was the fair result in the end.”
ADELAIDE CITY 1
METROSTARS 0
Adelaide City coach Michael Matricciani could not fault the effort of his team as it snapped a run of three straight defeats when it downed MetroStars 1-0 at home last Friday night.
Matricciani was also full of praise for Chris Pepe, who put in a great performance and scored the winner.
Pepe broke the deadlock in the 64th minute and City managed to hold on for the important three points to please their coach.
“It was a great team effort with everyone putting in 100 per cent,” Matricciani said.
“MetroStars are a strong team so I am very happy with the performance. A big congratulations to Chris Pepe, who put in a great performance.”
The Black and Whites, 11th, play Croydon Kings at Polonia Reserve this Saturday.
