Sacred Heart Old Collegians has landed a prized SANFL recruit six rounds in to the division two season – and he’s already made a big impact.

West Adelaide speedster Josh Koster debuted in the double blue on Saturday and booted two goals on his way to a best on ground performance against Athelstone.

The 23-year-old – the son of dual Adelaide Crows premiership player Kym Koster – will stay with SHOC for the remainder of the season.

Koster has played 41 games across stints at Glenelg and West after making his SANFL debut for the Tigers in 2016.

He played the first three rounds of this season with the Bloods’ league side before spending the next three in the reserves.

SHOC coach Steve Kay said Koster had bought in to the club after deciding to leave West.

“He adds a really exciting mix to our midfield and up forward,” Kay said.

“If the weekend is anything to go by, he’s going to be a really exciting and important player for us.

“He’s obviously got a fair bit of class and has played some really good league footy at West and Glenelg.

“He’ll be with us for this year then I’m sure he’ll sit down at the end of the season and think about what he would like to do next.

“Like any young player, we’re all for pushing him to pursue league football, if that’s what he wants to do.

“He’s a very talented kid and is engaged in what we’re doing.”

Koster is a Sacred Heart old scholar and his father Kym, who played 133 AFL games at Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs, is a former SHOC coach.

On Saturday, his injection of speed and class was a deciding factor as last year’s division two grand finalists beat Athelstone 16.10 (106) to 8.9 (57).

The win took SHOC to a 3-3 record and just outside the finals spots in sixth place.

Kay’s side faces winless Scotch Old Collegians at home this Saturday before tough tests against Henley and Broadview.

“We’ve been in every game so far and been really competitive,” Kay said.

“We probably let one slip against Iggies … but I’ve been really pleased with the growth and development each week.

“We don’t underestimate Scotch, they’ve pushed Glenunga and PHOS all the way and those are the top two sides on the ladder.”

SURPRISE MID-SEASON DRAFT NOMINEE

When the list of more than 300 players who have put their hand up for the AFL’s mid-season draft was released earlier this week, there was one surprise inclusion from the Adelaide Footy League.

Morphettville Park youngster Kye Dean’s name appeared among the nominees.

While the forward has had a strong start to the season in division four, kicking 15 goals in six games, Roos coach Steve Nolis was surprised to hear the news when contacted this week.

It turns out Dean, who has previously put his hand up for the draft, inadvertently registered after receiving an email inviting him to nominate.

Dean is a former state under-16 representative who came through the ranks at Glenelg and made handful of reserves appearances for the Tigers last season.

Nolis described him as a “great kid” with plenty of talent.

He has been a key part of the set up at Morphettville Park this season with the Roos third on the division four ladder.

SPOC COPS INJURY BLOW

Division one contender St Peter’s Old Collegians has been dealt a significant injury blow with star onballer Jesse O’Brien facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

The ex-Brisbane Lions midfield injured his knee in the round four clash against Payneham Norwood Union.

SPOC coach Geoff Riddle said it had since been determined O’Brien would be out until at least the second half of the season.

Saints have early wins in the back however and sit third on the ladder with a 4-2 record.

In the same round four match PNU copped a series of unfortunate casualties which has left it with an injury depleted squad for the next month.

LEADING GOAL KICKERS

Six rounds into the season there are some gun forwards beginning to record bags of goals each week.

Here’s the top 10 leading goal kickers across the men’s A, B and C grade divisions.
