Coorong Cats extend huge undefeated streak as they start RMFL season 3-0

One of SA country footy’s top sides is still yet to lose a game since the end of the 2023 and has experienced the perfect start to season 2025 under the guidance of a former AFL player.

One of SA country footy’s strongest sides has extended its huge undefeated streak with a perfect start to season 2025.

Reigning River Murray Football League premier Coorong Cats, player-coached by former Geelong and WWTFC gun Daniel Menzel, has started the year 3-0, most recently defeating top challenger Jervois by 33 points.

The Cats’ last loss came in the 2023 finals series, the club signing Menzel ahead of season 2024 and dominating for the entire year to win its first RMFL premiership.

While the side was untouchable in 2024, a number of major signings were made ahead of 2025 including former Glenelg and Sacred Heart OC flanker Seb Kerrish, young gun forward Jaden Ward and midfielder Keenan Jacobs, making the team a force again this season.

“It’s been a really solid start for us,” Menzel said.

“We’ve played against three of last year’s finalists so far (Mypolonga, Imperials, Jervois) so it has been a good challenge in the early season and we’re pleased to have gone 3-0 in that time.

“I was really pleased (against Jervois) with how we played across the park with probably our most inexperienced side since I’ve been here.

“To have some players out and for the system to stand up was great to see.”

The Cats have been a force around the ground and in the contest with their ability to win the footy and spread quickly with fast ball movement to create goalkicking opportunities.

They have also had consistent contributions by their recruits, with both Kerrish and Jacobs standing out against the Bluds last Saturday.

“The new guys have been great,” Menzel said.

The more games Coorong wins, the more RMFL followers will discuss the possibility of the club achieving a historic two consecutive seasons undefeated.

Menzel said his side was embracing all expectations and remaining focused on the task at hand each week.

“We’re absolutely welcoming expectations.

“At the same time, we know we’re not unstoppable and we’ve seen in our games so far this year that teams will get on top of us at times.

“We’re learning from our wins and we take confidence from that and we’re not feeling the pressure.

“For us the pressure is less because we already won the club’s first premiership last season, now we’re setting out to achieve success again this year.”
