The Old Reds move a win clear at the top of the division one ladder, while 2018 premiers Tea Tree Gully go down by more than 100 points.

All that plus more in Messenger Community News’ round 10 match wraps.

DIVISION ONE

Adam Perryman, Jake Pitt (five goals) and Tom Spanovski led Prince Alfred Old Collegians to a 41-point triumph against Rostrevor Old Collegians at Park Nine on Saturday.

The Old Reds remain top after prevailing 13.12 (90) to 7.7 (49).

ROC player/coach Will O’Malley said poor skills and a lack of composure with and without the ball killed off his side’s chances of victory.

“They were too good for us in the end,” O’Malley said.

“But our skill level was the worst I have seen from us for the year and put us under pressure.

“We burned ourselves with our disposal but I said to the players not to get too disheartened, we can bounce back.’’

Sam Jonas, William Mead and Jackson Sutcliffe battled hard for the visitors.

ROC club stalwart Luke Manuel played his 150th game.

Reigning premier Tea Tree Gully endured a 144-point loss to second-placed Payneham Norwood Union at home on Saturday.

The Gullies went down 30.19 (199) to 8.8 (56) against the Falcons.

The hosts were only down by nine points at quarter-time but the visitors broke the game open in the second term booting 6.5 to the Gullies’ 2.2.

The flood gates well and truly opened in the third quarter as the Falcons kicked 7.5, while holding Tea Tree Gully to just two points.

Jordan Miller worked hard for the Gullies, finishing with four goals, while Chris Foura and Zac McKay also tried to provide a bit of support.

But they proved no match for the high-flying Falcons as ex-Norwood forward Alex Forster booted seven majors and Liam Davis had five to his name.

It was the Gullies’ fourth consecutive loss.

Tea Tree Gully is now staring down the barrel of relegation to division two next season as it sits second-bottom with a 3-7 record.

It has been an agonising fall from the top for the Gullies and coach Justin Maschotta after losing about 10 players from the 2018 flag-winning side.

Goodwood Saints will know if it is a contender or pretender for this season’s finals in its next two home games, says coach Adam Jeffries.

“We have games at home against Tea Tree Gully and Adelaide University who are below us on the ladder and playing at home where we haven’t loss this season,’’ Jeffries said.

“If we are serious about finals these are the games we have to win.”

The Saints held on beat Brighton away on Saturday in a heart stopping finish 11.10 (76) to 12.6 (78).

Tom Anderson and Ben Holzbauer were best for the Saints.
A kick on goal about 45m out after the siren from Bombers’ Jack Chalmers fell short, handing the visitors a victory.

Brighton coach Joel Tucker was left to lament his side’s inability to win close games.

“The second quarter cost us where we looked flat,” Tucker said.

“But then I thought we controlled the third and just didn’t take enough chances in the last.

“It was more what we did up the ground which cost us.

“We have lost several games narrowly. Win those and we would be higher. We just have to win those close games.’’

Henley coach Jarrad Parker says his team’s victory against St Peter’s Old Collegians at Caterer Oval on Saturday was one of the most inspiring he had seen since being involved with the club.

The Sharks entered the battle against then-fourth placed SPOC with a simple plan – to pressure the opposition at every contest.

Bottom-placed Henley did that for most of the day and were rewarded with a 10.9 (69) to 9.13 (67) win despite trailing by 11 points with about 10 minutes to go.

Ned Heath, Brad Geddes and Corey Gray led the way for the Sharks, while Ben Lodge, Jack Hambly and Jackson Smith kicked two goals each.

“Our pressure overall was the best it has been all season,” Parker said.

“Even though our third quarter was disappointing we kept believing.

“We were challenged a few times and down rotations but I think we controlled play in the end.

“Hopefully this was a turning point and will give the boys a bit of confidence.’’

Luke Mitchell booted four majors for the hosts, while Tom Fotheringham, James Moriarty,

Tom Matsouliadis and James Duncan also played well for SPOC.

A strong mix of defensive and attacking football proved the key to Port District’s gritty win against Adelaide University, says Magpies coach Simon Maddern.

“We were slow out of the blocks and were down at quarter time and half-time,’’ Maddern says.

“But the boys steadied and after half-time we played a strong brand of defensive and attacking footy.

“Things are building steadily for us as a club with four wins from four senior grades (on Saturday).’’

The Magpies took the match 13.8 (96) to 8.7 (55) to sit fourth on the ladder behind Rostrevor Old Collegians on percentage.

Sean Davidson, James Batty (six goals) and Tom Corcoran enjoyed strong games, while Gavin Shephard kicked three goals.

The Hawks prevailed 11.8 (74) to 9.14 (68) away.

Hay was relieved his side avoided recording its third draw for this season.

“We had them under pressure for most of the day but then we just froze in the last quarter,’’ Hay said.

“We were still three goals up with about five minutes to go but they kept coming.
