NORTH ADELAIDE 6.5 (41) CENTRAL DISTRICT 3.5 (23)
Central District missed a big opportunity to snare a vital win for its SANFLW finals chances when it went down to North Adelaide at Norwood Oval on Saturday.
The Roosters led at every change to defeat the Bulldogs 6.5 (41) to 3.5 (23) and move ahead into fifth spot.
Both sides trail fourth-placed West Adelaide by a win with five rounds remaining.
North jumped out to an early lead as it kept Central scoreless and took a 15-point advantage into the first change, following goals to Kelly Barltrop and co-captain Nadia von Bertouch.
The Bulldogs hit back through majors to former Rooster and Crows AFLW-listed players Katelyn Rosenzweig and Jessica Sedunary to trail by one point at the main break.
North then flexed its muscle and Barltrop booted another three goals in the second half to propel her side to an 18-point victory.
Sedunary, who finished with 2.1, collected 17 touches to be her side’s best.
Danielle Stewart also had 17 disposals and Gemma Doughty laid a game-high eight tackles.
North coach Matt Slade was pleased his side snapped a two-game losing streak.
He also heaped praise on von Bertouch and defender Olivia Gallio.
“Nadia hasn’t had a bad game yet because she just works tirelessly,” Slade said.
“She is fit and super keen.
“She reads the ball well and is very effective in close.
“Olivia Gallio’s role on Katelyn Rosenzweig was great because it completely shut her down.”
STURT 0.5 (5) GLENELG 0.3 (3)
Sturt claimed its first win of the season, beating Glenelg without a goal scored for the entire match on Saturday.
The Double Blues beat the Tigers 0.5 (5) to 0.3 (3) at Norwood Oval in a pressure-filled match with plenty of stoppages.
There were 212 tackles laid between both teams (94 from Sturt and 118 from Glenelg).
Sturt Danjel Herbut said it was important for his side to notch its first win, no matter how ugly, to help boost the players’ confidence.
“We are really excited to get that first win,” Herbut said.
“That’s (scoring) has probably been our issue all year, inside forward 50 entries are fine but when it comes to scoring we struggle a little bit.
“As a coach, as long as our systems are working and we are able to adjust and adapt to the game we are playing, I have no issue.
“I was really happy we were able to win a lot of the contested footy and drive the ball forward.”
Sturt controlled much of the game but struggled to cleanly move the ball forward and find a target inside 50.
Double Blue Sophie Hoyle recorded a game-high 20 possessions, while co-captain Georgia Bevan and Larissa Schenscher (16 disposals) were also strong.
Glenelg coach Jason Fairall said his young side was in a “rebuilding phase” and encouraged players to remain positive.
“The issue is we’ve got some players that are just learning and they are going to be up and down,” Fairall said.
“Right now they are down, so how we manage that is going to be pretty critical.
“We still need an output from them and we still need them to learn and improve.
“We don’t want them to go back into their shells we just have to keep moving forward.”
Chelsea Packer (20 disposals), Lucy Armitage and Lucy Bellinger (18 apiece) were Glenelg’s best.
NORWOOD 9.10 (64) WEST ADELAIDE 0.1 (1)
Norwood continued to prove it is a cut above the rest, thrashing West Adelaide at The Parade on Saturday.
The Redlegs held the Bloods to just on point and dominated every key statistic including the inside-50 count (38-8), kicks (169-108), marks (52-18) and handballs (93-49).
West only finished ahead in the tackle count (48-35).
Alison Ferrall led the way for the Redlegs with three majors, while Najwa Allen continued to be a force in the midfield, racking up a game-high 33 possessions.
Bloods defender Maddison Newman (22 touches) battled hard, as did skipper Lauren Rodato (17).
SOUTH ADELAIDE 9.12 (66) WOODVILLE-WEST TORRENS 2.0 (12)
South Adelaide is only one win plus percentage behind top-placed Norwood after a dominant display against Woodville-West Torrens at Noarlunga on Saturday.
The Panthers were slow out of the blocks but kept the visitors scoreless while booting three straight majors in the second quarter to claim a 54-point win.
Rising start Teah Charlton’s performance was South’s best, collecting 24 disposals and kicking three goals.
Nicole Campbell and Hannah Munyard gave Charlton plenty of support, finishing with 20 touches.
Jovanka Zecevic was the Eagles’ highest possession-getter with 16, while Kiana Lee was also solid with 15.
Woodville-West Torrens, a newcomer to the competition this season, is still winless and sits bottom.
