A dynamic ruck-rover duo has made a surprise reunion in SA country footy.
Married At First Sight star Seb Guilhaus and SANFL ball-magnet James Boyd made their debuts for Victor Harbor in the Great Southern Football League on Saturday.
Teammates at both Central District and Woodville-West Torrens, the pair were named first and second best for the Kangaroos in their loss to McLaren.
Guilhaus told The Messenger he could not say no when Boyd, who quit the Bulldogs earlier this month, called asking if he wanted to pull the boots on again.
“I wasn’t going to play football at all this year but me and ‘Boydy’ have been very, very close and a bit of a ruck-rover duo for a long time,” Guilhaus said.
“He gave me a buzz after what happened with Central District and it’s the first time for him that he’s played at a lower level than SANFL in 16 years.
“So I was like OK, let’s put the boots on and give it a crack.
“We’ve got a very good connection, it’s almost unspoken maybe even some Jedi mind tricks type thing going on, so I sort of know where he wants the ball.”
Guilhaus, who appeared on season seven of the reality TV show last year, dominated the ruck on Saturday with Boyd feeding off his taps.
But it was not enough as Victor Harbor went down by 52 points.
The Kangaroos are winless from their first two matches and were belted 167 points at home to Willunga in round one.
Guilhaus said Boyd had taken up a coaching role at the club and there were positives, despite the defeats.
“We were pretty competitive, we just dropped off in the final quarter and there’s a lot of promising signs and a young group,” he said.
“I’m going to try to get in as many games as possible.”
The 198cm ruckman last played in the SANFL for the Eagles in 2019 and said he enjoyed his foray back into country football.
“I definitely do cop a lot of flack (on the field) for going on the show but that’s sort of expected,” Guilhaus said.
“I’m pretty thick-skinned and I like a bit of banter, so it’s nothing that really fazes me.”
Victor Harbor will take on arch rivals Encounter Bay this Saturday, with both sides searching for their first win of the season.
