An SA country footballer has allegedly received racial abuse after laying a dangerous tackle which will see him miss this weekend’s grand final.
The Advertiser has been told Jervois Football Club reserves player Raymond Love has been suspended for four games for a dangerous tackle against Mypolonga in last weekend’s winning preliminary final and will miss this Saturday’s grand final against Imperials.
It has also been confirmed the Mypolonga player who was tackled was medically assessed after the incident and told not to play football again.
Love, who has played two A Grade games and 10 reserves games through the middle for Jervois this year, allegedly received a number of vitriolic comments in person and on social media after the tackle.
In a now deleted Facebook post, Love’s wife expressed her disgust at the response the tackle had garnered.
“My husband is not a dirty player, it was an accident,” she said.
“He feels bad enough as it is.
“I’ve kept my mouth shut for long enough – the bullying, harassment and racism we have experienced already, we’ve made our decision for our family next year.”
The River Murray Football League refused to comment on any details surrounding the process, suspension or incident.
The Jervois and Mypolonga football clubs were both contacted for this story.
