Former Central District defender Luke Barmby has finished his first season back in the local ranks with Golden Grove by taking out the Adelaide Footy League’s GS Heard Medal for best and fairest in division three.

The dashing half-back flanker stormed home with eight votes in the last three rounds to total 24 and come from behind to pip Flinders Park’s Daniel Blythe by a single vote.

The league’s division three to seven, plus reserves and C grade medals were awarded on Thursday night.

Barmby was four votes adrift of Blythe after round 15 but then polled the maximum in the next two matches and two votes in a final round loss to North Haven.

Blythe registered three votes in round 17 but failed to poll in the last match of the season – a 75 point defeat of Morphettville Park.

Barmby, who played 130 league games for the Dogs before retiring from the SANFL at the end of last season, played a starring role in Golden Grove’s push towards the major round.

The Kookaburras will play Flinders Park in a do-or-die first semi-final away this Saturday.

In division six, Hectorville’s Jake Mazzone took out the AG Bert Medal with an impressive total of 32 to finish 12 votes ahead of Elizabeth’s Jake Reynolds and West Croydon’s Luke Nicholls.

Fourth-tier minor premiers SMOSH West Lakes had another win as Sam Fairclough triumphed in the JW Schulz Medal while clubmate Dillon Coates took out the reserves best and fairest.

Pulteney’s Rory Brodie topped the votes in division five ahead of Kenilworth ruckman Neil Vea Vea.

Jake Tonkin polled 26 votes for Mawson Lakes in division seven to be awarded the RA Stennett Medal over St Paul’s Old Scholars pair Lucio Malatesta and Matt Rowson.

The division one and two medallists will be named at an awards night on Monday, September 9.
