Payneham Norwood Union will need to “tidy a few things up” and switch on for longer to have a chance at claiming the division one premiership, says coach Garry McIntosh.

The Falcons earned the right to battle Prince Alfred Old Collegians in this Saturday’s flag decider after beating Rostrevor Old Collegians in the preliminary final last weekend.

McIntosh’s side trailed by 27 points at half-time against ROC but fought its way back to prevail 19.9 (123) to 14.11 (95) at Payneham Oval.

The Falcons are now chasing their first top-tier flag after losses at the top level in 2015 and 2017.

Liam Davis starred with five goals, while Anthony Giannini and Cameron Milne (two goals) were key players.

Alex Forster was given plenty of attention from the opposition players but finished the match with five majors.

McIntosh said his side’s spirit shone through.

“The funny thing is that the last two times we have played ROC in a final we have been smashed in at least one quarter,” McIntosh said.

“That happened in the second quarter but our midfield was enormous in the second half after a very ordinary first half.

“If you match us up on ROC it is so even but the last two times in those finals they have embarrassed us.

“We have to tidy up a few of those lapses before next week’s final. It should be a very tight match.”

ROC player/coach Will O’Malley refused to make excuses after the loss.

“They dominated the second half and really deserved to win,” O’Malley said.

“We just couldn’t get our hands on the ball then after a good start.

“It wasn’t our day but that’s footy.

“The top three sides were so even during the year. I think we have had a good year.’’

Paul Fantasia, Tullio De Matteis and Luke Manuel (three goals) played well for ROC.
