Flagstaff Hill will don special guernseys during their Anzac Day round clash with Reynella at home this Saturday to honour Australia’s servicemen and women.
The Southern Football League has partnered with the Morphett Vale RSL for a second year in a row, giving the reigning premier a chance to wear the specifically designed guernseys.
RSL members designed this year’s jumpers to commemorate the 80th year since Australia joined World War Two.
Falcons skipper David Kearsley is proud to have been involved last year.
But he says this year’s match will have extra meaning because he is captaining the side, having taken over from Michael Shearer who is on the sidelines this season with an ACL injury.
“We did it last year and we were the first ones to do so, which was pretty special,” Kearsley says.
“When you think about all the history, it’s pretty special.
“For us to be able to play in a game that celebrates all the servicemen and women is pretty cool.
“Last year when we played against Noarlunga, we had a big crowd and it was a really good day.”
The league traditionally schedules a grand final rematch during its Anzac Day round and awards the best player on the day the Malpas Medal, named after Victoria Cross recipient and past SFL president James Stanley Malpas.
Reynella captain Ben Lockett is also proud to be involved and says it is important to remember both past and present Diggers.
Morphett Vale RSL president Ron Payne is grateful for the SFL’s support.
Flagstaff Hill guernseys will be auctioned off after the game.
Proceeds will go to not-for-profit charity Veterans Welfare which assists servicemen and women in need.
Flagstaff Hill hosts Reynella this Saturday at 2.30pm.
Keith Payne, VC, AM, who served during the Vietnam War will be a special guest on the day.
