Hahndorf B Grade forward Sam Hill only kicked 10 goals in season 2021 – but none was more important than the last one.
His minor premier side was trailing by four points late in the final term of the big dance against second-spot Mt Barker in wet and windy conditions.
Vying for their third straight flag, the Magpies won the ball in the middle and went on one last attack along the wing.
Hill quickly made space near the forward pocket and took an uncontested mark as the siren sounded.
“I couldn’t hear the siren because of the noise the crowd and players were making but I could tell it had gone and it set in quickly that the game was about to be decided from my kick,” Hill said.
“I couldn’t really believe it and I was quite nervous and almost numb but I just kept telling myself to focus on my routine and kick through the ball.”
With hands in heads and six Mt Barker players on the mark, Hill strolled in and slotted the ball through the big sticks, winning his team a hard-fought premiership.
He was instantly mobbed by teammates and supporters, an experience he said he’ll never forget.
“It was a bloody good feeling when the ball went through,” Hill said.
“All the boys tackled me in celebration. It was just a rush of adrenaline.”
The victory was the start of a huge Saturday for the Hahndorf Footy Club, with the A Grade side defeating Uraidla Districts by eight points in another close clash to win their fourth flag in a row.
Hill said the whole club was ecstatic with the day’s successes.
“it wasn’t our best performance on Sunday but the determination and fight the whole team showed in the last quarter was unreal,” he said.
“Three in a row for B Grade and four for the A Grade is an amazing achievement for the club.
“We’ve had some great success over the last few years and everyone had a great couple nights at the footy club celebrating both wins.”
